Greene County, NC - Court - Rogers vs Vines, 1845 4035 – ROGERS vs VINES NC Supreme Court Case found at the NC Archives, Raleigh, NC Greene Co – 12 August 1845 Stephen Rogers sent out a writ against Samuel Vines of Pitt Co Court to be held on the 2nd Mon after the fourth Monday of Sept – that Vines render unto Rogers a certain Negro slave named Esther valued at $400, Negro slave Wilis valued at $500, Negro slave named Mary valued at $400, Negro slave Hilliard valued at $300, Negro slave Martha valued at $300 – Vines has detained them – and damages of $2000 Edward Stanley and George Mordicie attorney for Vines There was another slave Abram – Negroes were property of Rogers – a bill for divorce and alimony was filed in Greene Co at the fall term 1837 by Elizabeth Rogers wife of Stephen and at the spring term 1838 a decree was made in her favor divorcing her from bed and board and setting apart Negroes Esther, Wilie and Mary, the two last named being the children of said Esther and of the age of six - Elizabeth to have alimony and maintance out of the estate of the def (sic) of ½ of the saw mill tract for the year 1838 and 1839 and after the year 1839, 1/3 of the rent of the lands and mill conveyed by Benjamin May to the def by deed dated 15 Nov 1803 – also Negroes Esther & child Wilie and girl Mary - John Joiner and Samuel Vines authorized to rent out land and pay the parties - they are to surrender the Negroes within 5 days - Hilliard, Abram and Martha are the issue of the woman Ester born after the rendering of the divorce and they were taken into the possession of sd Elizabeth under the same decree – Ester and her three children Wilie, Mary and Hilliard were purchased by the def from Elizabeth on the 13 Aug 1838 for $1000 and the other children born after the purchase – rent from the land was $180 per year which sd Elizabeth was entitled to 1/3 – Negroes were no profit to sd Elizabeth but were expensive to her – Elizabeth Rogers died about the 3 or 4 of May 1845 and the Negroes have remained in the possession of Vines – Pft demands the Negroes – Esther now valued at $350,Wilie at $400, Mary at $275, Hilliard at $200, Abram at $200 and Martha at $100 Bill of Sale from Elizabeth I, Elizabeth Rogers of the county of Pitt for $1000 paid by Samuel Vines of Pitt have sold one Negro woman Esther with her several children named Wilie, Mary and Hilliard – 13 August 1838 WIT J.
