Glasgow County, NC - Court Records File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Grace Williamson Turner Transcribed and posted by Lori Price Cobb (jhcobb@iquest.net) Dec 5, 1793 To the honorable, the General Assembly The memorial of William Taylor of Glasgow County humbly sheweth That your memorialist being a Candidate in his County aforesaid at the last election for a seat in the House of Commons of the present General Assembly and as he concieves treatis with injustice by the Sheriff, Clerk, and Inspectors of the ____, and thereby deprived of his election do therefore pray your honorable body to hear his allegations, and do there in what justic & right demands. Hunt The Comm of priv & elect To whom ------ Thomas Person Report from the Com Priv & Elections on the petition of W Taylor Glasgow Co -------------------------------------------------------- This day Personally appeared before one of the Justices of the Peace for the County of Glasgow Thomas Carraway and made Oath on the Holy Evangalist of Almighty God that on the last day of the Election ____ in the County of Glasgow for representitancy to the next General Assembly that when the Tickets was counted Out that the Inspector went out ______ and were asked who was Elected and Said that William Taylor and Martin Gardner Sheppard was; but after some time John Charles Parsonby who was one of the Clerks said that Martin Gardner Sheppard and Hamerick Hooker was Elected, but that William Taylor one of the Candidates Said to the Sheriff that he would not stand to such proceedings and Said that the Clerk Books was not ________ for they had carried their Books out of the Inspectors this diponant & further sayeth that he hearde Samuel Speight one of the Inspectors call to Samuel Caswell on the Clerks to bring in his Books at The Same time he see a Man Writing in Said Caswells Books as this deponant bileivers, and that he see Samuel Speight come out of the House and take the Book from Said Caswell and carried it in to the house for Inspection, further this deponant Sayethe not. Nov 26, 1793 Thos Carraway Sworn before M. Martin -------------------------------------------------------- This day personally before me one of the Justices of the County of Glasgow Jesse Homes and made Oath on the Holy Evangalist of Almighty God that on the last day of the Election held for the County of Glasgow for representitancy in the next General Assembly that when the Election was closed and the Ticketts counted out then the Clerks was called back by the Inspectors to bring back their Books to see who was duly Elected. This deponant further sayeth that when they were brought back that he then see when looking over one of the Clerks Books where William Taylors Poll was kept taht part of the page was taken of when his was not further this deponant sayeth not Nov 26th 1793 Sworn before Jesse Homes M Martin JP -------------------------------------------------------- This day persininaly appeared before me one of the Justices of the Peace of Wayn County Kinchen Faircloth of Glasgow County and made oth on the hold Evengilist of Almighty God that at the last day of the Election held for the County of Glasgow for _________ representatives in the next General Assembly that when the Election was closed and the Tickets Counted out that the Clerks took their Books and went out before they were call up to see who was Elected and then they was caled in by the inspectors to Bring Back their Books and when they were come in with their Books the Deponant saith that he then saw one of the Clerks Books _____ and misplased to with John Williams book one of the Clerks who kept the pole for the Commons and further this deponant saith not November 29, 1793 Sworn to before me Kinchin Faircloth Richard Hamm JP --------------------------------------------------------- The committee of priviliges & Elections to whom was refered the petition of William Taylor Report that after a full investigation of the subject of the said petition and due examination of the proof ______ paying the same. Your Committee are of appinion that the allegations and charges set forth in the Said Petition are not sufficiently supported and that if injustice has been done the petitioner, by the Sheriff, Clerks, or Inspectors as stated in the petition does not legally appear to the Committee.
