This Deed, made this 25th day of March 1889, by J. (John) H. (Ham) Hodges & J. 
(Jane) E. (Elizabeth) Hodges of Greene County and State of North Carolina, to 
Ella J. (Jane) Smith & S.(Sarah) E. (Elizabeth) Peacock, Mollie & Elva(sic) 
(Ava?) Hodges of Greene County and State of North Carolina, 

Witnesseth: That said J.H. Hodges & J.E. Hodges in consideration of sum of five 
Dollars Dollars (sic) to be (sic) paid by the said parties which is hereby 
acknowledged ha (sic) bargained and sold, and by these presents do bargain, 
sell and convey to said said (sic) parties and their heirs a our interest in 
tract of land in Shine Township, Greene County, State of North Carolina 
adjoining the lands of Mollie H. Edmonson, J.P. Taylor J.B & R.E. Best Suggs 
heirs J.R. Smith & S.E Peacock and others bounded as follows: viz.  by M.H. 
Edmonson on the west, J.P. Taylor on the south, Suggs heirs on the east, J.R. 
Smith and S.E. Peacock on the north.  We except 40 acres on the east side of 
the dwelling for the benefit of J.H. Hodges natural lives also one room of said 
dwelling & also 20 acres adjoining the land of J.R. Smith on the northeast by? 
40 acres under mortgage held by W.H. Dail southeast by? . We want said tract of 
land to be equally divided between said heirs of J.H. and J.E. Hodges and 
interest of E.J. Smith is to be in the lands of J.R. Smith on the east side of 
Cow Branch and J.E. Hodges reserves My life estate in said tract of land.

To have and to hold the aforesaid tract of land and all privileges and 
appurtenances threreto belonging to the said tract of land their heirs and 
assigns to their only use and behoof.

And the said J.H. Hodges & J. E Hodges covenant that they are seized of said 
premises in fee and ha (sic) right to convey the same in fee simple; that the 
same are free from all incumberances, and that they will warrant and defend 
said title to the same, against the claims of all Persons whatsoever.

In testimony whereof, the said J.H. Hodges & J.E. Hodges ha (sic) hereunto set 
their hand and seal on? The day and year above written.
