Permission to post given by DAR. This is a copy of a letter written by Delpha Ann Hartsfield Shipp to a niece she had never seen, and in which she tells of the family of her parents, Lewis and Lovie Barfield Hartsfield. Silas, Texas April 7, 1905 Mrs. John R. Tolar Dear Madam: Your letter received and can’t express my surprise to think I should again hear from my sister’s family, for I am sure you are my niece. This is the first information I have had of her since 1842. I was only four years old when my parents left N. C. but I will write you all I know of my parents and their families. My mother was Lovie Barfield and was married to Louis Hartsfield at or near Hookerton, Greene Co., N. C. in the year 1827. Mother had five sisters, Sally Moore, Cloy (Chloe) Hill, Bettie Tendle, Samantha Laster, and Winnie who died single, and one brother, James Barfield, also a half brother and sister, Allen and Niccie Stansel. Mother had ten children, five girls and five boys whose names were Sally Adeline (who was your mother), Richard M., Elias H., Benjamin T., Thomas A., Jeselony (?) H., John C., and Delpha Ann Hartsfield Miller Shipp, the writer. Father had only two brothers that I have any knowledge of Benjamin and David Hartsfield who when last heard of lived in Miss. Father moved from Johnston County to Butler County, Alabama, in 1836, and in 1854 came to Texas (Nacogdoches Co.) where he lived until his death in 1866 at the age of 67, mother having died two years previous at the age of 62. I am the only one of my father’s family living. I am 73 years old. I am the mother of seven children, of whom three are living namely: Mrs. Miller Anderson Bogard, R. S. Shipp, and B. M. Shipp, all of Shelby County. Three of my brothers lived to be grown and married. Brother Richard was murdered by his slaves in the year 1862, leaving a wife and two children, Olive and Mary. Brother Ben died in the Confederate service in 1862 leaving a wife and two children, Mary Alice and W. T. Hartsfield. Brother Tom died in 1873 leaving a wife and two children, L. M. and Allie C. Hartsfield. My sister Jeffy was married to M. Souther in 1867, dying in 1886 leaving two sons and three daughters. I am a grandmother of 19 children and four great grandchildren. I am at the present, on a visit to my baby child who is 37 years old. My home is with my daughter Mrs. J. T. Bogard of Timpson. I have written you briefly all I know of my parents and their families. I would be very glad indeed to have you visit with us in the near future and would highly appreciate one of your pictures. Please answer soon and let me know all you can of my ancestors. Again hoping to hear from you soon and to receive one of your pictures, I am Sincerely Delpha Ann Hartsfield Miller Shipp ============================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
