G, 8th NC Regt. at the age of 16. Taken prisoner of war at Roanoke Island, Feb. 8, 1862, he was paroled. He deserted Nov. 1862 but returned to the regiment by July 1863. He deserted again in Dec. 1863, at Weldon, NC. and was court-martialed and sentenced to be shot. Apparently pardoned by Pres. Jefferson Davis, he returned to duty and was shot in the temple destroying both eyes at Cold Harbor, Va. June 1, 1864. Following is the petition sent to Pres. Jefferson Davis by Greene County citizens asking that Calvin Forrest be pardoned. To, His Excellency Jefferson Davis President, Confederate States of America The petition of the subscribers respectfully showith that Calvin Forrest a private of Co. G, 8th Regiment No C Troops commanded by Capt. Amos Hines having been condemned to be shot for desertion. That the said Forrest volunteered in June 1861, at the age of sixteen years, and that the crime for which he is about to suffer from the best information we can get was at the instigation of injudicious friends. We would also state to your Excellency that his father is in the service and has performed his duty faithfully and is now a prisoner in the hands of the enemy. The family of this young man's father consists of seven small children who are still with this mother and are very poor they having to be supported by the Indigent Soldier's fund of the county. We therefore at the solicitation of his afflicted mother pray your Excellency to interpose your power to pardon the offense of this poor young man. And your petitioners will ever pray so.
