Greene County, NC - Obituary of James P. Britt, 1888 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OBITUARY OF J.P. BRITT As it is a custom of the church to have an obituary of a deceased member prepared and if accepted, recorded on the record of the church and as such duty has been generally performed by the clerk, I hereby submit such as I have been able to prepare as a memorial and testimony on behalf of this church to the memory of our dearly beloved brother James P. Britt, whom the Father has seen fit to call from our midst, and through his short term of membership which was not quite three years was good and pleasant, his walk was upright and always filled his seat when able. And as a fellow citizen and neighbor he was highly esteemed and useful and obliging, assisting the poor and needy. In his last sickness though only for a few days his sufferings were great. He had been afflicted for many years with a combination of diseases such as Rheuma-tism, Paralyses & c. ? His last attack was Paralyses or congestion to the brain. Brother Britt was born 29th day of May 1830 in Wayne County, N.C. His genealogy by his father's side were as follows: The deceased was the son of Benj. Britt who was the son of Henry Britt and the said Henry Britt came from Virginia and we are unable to trace it any further. The deceased mother's maiden name was Smithy Taylor. Her and her husband Benj. Britt were both members of the Baptist Church and held their membership with the church at Nahunta, Wayne County, The deceased was united in marriage to Miss Nancy J. Wooten in March 1856 and were born unto them five living children; 4 girls and one boy all living. God was bless to show him what he was by nature and what he must be by grace before he could see the Kingdom of Heaven and gave him a good hope in Christ, and in June 1885 he with his dear companion, our beloved sister, were received into the fellowship of the church at Mewborn's, in Greene County, N.C. and was baptised by Elder J.W. Gardner. Brother Britt passed away on the morning of 29th of May 1888. The funeral services at his own request was attended by Elder T.B. Lancaster after which his remains were layed into its last resting place followed by many sorrowing friends (both white and colored) selected by himself to await the doors of the glorious resurrection morn.
