COX died at his home at Speights Bridge, in Greene County, November 15, 1908. He was born March 4, 1830 and was in his seventy-ninth year. He had a stroke of paralysis on the 4th of June 1908, from which he never recovered. There was a gradual decline in flesh and strength from the time he was taken. He was a great sufferer, but bore it all patiently and was perfectly resigned to his Father's will. Often while lying on his bed perfectly helpless he would thank the Lord that he was nearing his heavenly home. He was converted in May 1854, and joined the church at Johnson Liberty, near Clayton, the second Sunday in May 1855. He died a member of Castoria Baptist Church. Although a Baptist, he was a liberal one and loved all Christians of every denomination. He was a faithful attendant at the Tabernacle Methodist Church near his home. The pastor of this church, Rev. J. M. Benson, whom he so much loved, conducted the funeral services at his home on Monday afternoon, November 16, 1908. He was the oldest child of Sanders P. Cox and Polly Wooten Cox and at the time of his death was the only surviving child. A number of brothers and sisters having preceded him to the grave some years ago. In 1854, when a young man, he began a mercantile business in the town of Clayton - he being one of the early settlers of this progressive town. He was married to Mary Ann Eliza Pool, June 5, 1855, who survives him, and with whom he lived happily for fifty-three years. Besides his devoted wife who nursed him so tenderly during his sickness, he leaves to mourn his departure - nine children- Bettie Johns, Omega Shields and Sanders P. Cox who live in Durham, Minnie Cox Austin, whose home is in Clayton and J. Dexter Cox who resides near the old home. The unmarried children are Lewis M., Patty, Vivian and Cohen Cox. He was a man void of offense toward God and all mankind, and died as he had lived with the undying faith that insures eternal happiness to those who believe in him. May God comfort the bereaved ones, and give them an abundant entrance into the heavenly home where separation is unknown. M.C.A. (Minnie Cox Austin) The obituary of Wiley W.
