W. A. Darden Dead Just as we go to press, we learn, by telegram, of the unexpected death of Capt. W. A. Darden, of Greene County, one of the truest Democrats and most chivalrous of men which occurred yesterday in Gatesville, N. C. where he was going the rounds of the lecturing tour assigned him by the State Farmer's Alliance, of which he was a prominent member. Capt. Darden was quiet and unobtrusive in his manner. He was strongly domestic in his habits and rather inclined to be reserved. Those who enjoyed the priviledge of intimacy with him were bound to esteem him for his sterling qualities and to love him for his many virtues. His leading characteristics were strict justice and firm adherence to principle. Faithful to his convictions, true to his friends, conscientious in the discharge of his duty, he was a man among men-faithful and tender and true-one who could be relied upon in any emergency. Capt. Darden was in the prime of usefulness and hope, with every indication that he would have received the nomination for State Auditor at the next general state Democratic Convention. Yet, in the midst of life he did not forget the "Beginning, Mean, and End of all things-God," and for years he had been a devout and exemplary member of the Methodist Church. Hence, it is gratifying to his friends and full of consolation to the loving relatives he leaves behind to know that, though his summons may have been sudden, yet where he "fell on sleep" he rested in the arms of a loving Savior. An earnest Christian there can be no doubt that his slumber, though dreamless aand endless here, has had a glorious waking beyond. The Head Light Goldsboro, N. C. Wednesday, June 4, 1890 The sad intelligence of the sudden death of Capt. Wm. A Darden reach- ed the city Monday evening, which occured on that day in Gatesville, Gates county, this State, where he was to deliver a lecture in the inter- est of the Farmers' Alliance. He was about 55 years of age, the father of Mrs. W. H. Borden, of this city, and highly esteemed in general. His remains will be brought to his home in Greene County, where the internment will be made today. A good man has gone to his reward. Kinston Free Press Thursday, June 5, 1890 This community was shocked Monday evening by a telegram from Gatesville which bore the sad intelligence of the death of Capt. Wm A. Darden. He was in Gates county at work in the interest of the Farmers Alliance as State Lecturer. We have not been able to receive anything definite in regard to his death. Some of his friends will meet his remains at Wilson and take them through the country to Greene county for internment. He leaves a family of ten children, seven of whom are hardly grown, to whom we extend the heartfelt sympathy of this entire community. The Wilson Advance Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina June 5, 1890 DEATH OF CAPT. DARDEN A telegram received here Tuesday announced the death of Capt. W. A. Darden, District Lecturer of the State Farmers' Alliance, in Gatesville Monday. He had just commenced a series of lectures in the First District in behalf of the Al- liance. His body was brought to this place Tuesday and taken from here to his home in Greene county and interred yesterday. We are unable to learn any particulars as to his death. Capt. Darden was born May 15th, 1836, and was in his 57th year. On May 15th, of the present year, he attended the Cattle Show here and ad- dressed the people present. How little did those who heard his plea for a better system of education, imagine that the speaker was standing on the threshold of eternity. His death is a painful surprise to our people. A true and noble- hearted Christian gentleman, he was incapable of doing wrong. We have known him long and intimately and es- teemed him as one of our best friends. For many years he has been a power of strength to his party in Greene county and was respected by his po- litical opponents as is the fortune of few men. The county of Greene sustains an irrepar- able loss and the State one of its best citizens in his death.
