Newspaper Article "Kinston Free Press" Monday, March 20, 1933 BROTHERS BATTLE TO DEATH GREENE COUNTY; PISTOLS Used by Jesse and Ed ORMOND to Settle Dispute-Six Shots Fired, Five taking Effect. Still Caused Trouble. A close range pistol dual between Jesse and Ed ORMOND, Hookerton Township, Greene County, brothers residing 300 yards apart, today had resulted in the deaths of both. They shot each other Saturday night. Jesse died in a hospital here early today from two bullets in his lungs, Ed with his head, breast and abdomen pierced, died almost instantly. Reports said a still in the neighborhood caused the men to fall out. Jesse made efforts to keep his brother's children away from the plant. Jesse went to Ed's home and became abusive, according to John HARRELL, eye witness of the shooting. When efforts to get Jesse to leave were unsuccessful Ed armed himself with a pistol, it was said. Jesse was armed. Six shots were fired. Five struck their marks, one fired by Ed going wild when HARRELL struck his pistol's barrel. Side by Side. The funeral of Ed was held yesterday. Burial was in a family cemetery. Jesse, overcome by remorse and apparently aware that he was near death, asked that they be buried side by side. Both men had families, it is said. Both were in their later thirties. Sheriff's officers yesterday located a 100-gallon still near the home of Charlie CHERRY, negro farm tenant living near the ORMOND'S and jailed him on a charge of operating it.
