Jesse Speight. Her companion had been severely afflicted for several days, and the attention with which she watch- ed by his bed day and night, was prob- ably one cause of her illness; and ere her soothing hand could restore him to health, she fell a victim to the prevailing fever, which proved to be too obstinate to yield to medical skill. She has left five small children, too young to be sen- sible of their bereavement, and an affec- tionate husband to mourn the loss of one who always cheered him with her tender affection, & c. Jesse Speight was the son of Capt Seth Speight and Elizabeth Vines, elected brigadier General of the NC Militia in 1823, served in The NC House of Commons 1822, NC Senate 1823-1828 (President of the Senate), US Congress 1829-1837, Speaker of the Mississippi House of Commons 1840, President of the Mississippi Senate 1843, US Senator from Mississippi 1845-1847.
