Greene County, NC - Carraway-Albritton Family Photos Back in the early 1990's I visited a lady in my home church, Fort Run FWB Church, in Shine located in Greene County, NC by the name of Mrs. Lillie Mae Harper. Ms. Harper's maiden name was Carraway. I was interested in this family because my great grandmother was Lula Carraway who married William Bryant Ham. Ms. Harper let me take the photos she thought were Carraway's out to the church and I xeroxed them. I am now attempting to get good copies of the original photos because I have a laptop and scanner and can make house calls. Ms. Harper's daughter allowed me to come to her house and scan the one's she was able to locate. There are many more she thinks we can locate soon. The photos in this collection are photos handed down from Mrs. Lillie Mae Carraway Harper's mother and father. Her father was Jim Carraway and her mother was Laura Mae Albritton. Unfortunately, most of the photos in this collection do not have names on them. I am hoping someone can help me identify them. Below is some information on this family which is helpful in helping one to determine who are in the photos. Lillie Mae Carraway was the daughter of Jim Carraway and Laura Mae Albritton. Jim Carraway was the son of Benajah Carraway and Beddie Murphy. William Carraway was born around 1806 and died around 1858. He married either Feddora Craft and/or Feddora Murphy. There is conflicting data regarding the last name for Feddora. William and Feddora had the following known children: 1. William Marcellus Carraway (b. Aug. 24, 1842 d. Nov. 6, 1917) married Leo Dicie Murphy 2. Penelope Carraway (b. Oct. 1843) married Bryant Mooring 3. Benajah A. Carraway (b. Sept. 17, 1845 d. Sept. 11, 1921) married Catherine Katie Heath 9. Jane Carraway (b. Feb. 23, 1857, d. May 22, 1945) married Richard Beaman. Interestingly, the three sons above, William Marcellus, Benajah A. and William M. married three daughters of Turnel Murphy and Absley Baker. Also, two of these Carraway sons (William Marcellus and Benajah A.) served in the Confederate army in NC Troops Company F, 61st Regiment. Benajah A. Carraway (b. Sept. 17, 1845 d. Oct. 17, 1910) was a farmer and Civil War veteran in Greene County who married Beddie Murphy about 1867. He and wife Beddie had the following known children: 1. William Turner Carraway (b. July 31, 1867, d. Dec. 13, 1942) married Emma R. Walston 2. Jesse J. Carraway (b. Aug. 7, 1869 d. May 18, 1926) married Lanie Murphy 3. Olivia Adlade Carraway (b. March 19, 1871 d. Oct. 10, 1872) 4. Katie Carraway (b. Feb. 18, 1874 d. May 21, 1943) married 1st Abner Eason and 2nd John H. Johnson 5. Lula Gertrude Carraway (b. April 18, 1876 d. Oct. 7, 1951) married William Bryant Ham 6. John T. Carraway (b. 1878) 7. James Jasper "Jim" Carraway (b. March 7, 1880 d. Oct. 14, 1934) married Laura Mae Albritton 8. Bettie Carraway (b. Aug. 11, 1883 d. Nov. 9, 1956) married Curtis Faulkner 9. Lossie Carraway (b. Aug. 29, 1887 d. June 17, 1971) married WL "Teat" Moye 10. Benjamin Franklin Carraway (b. July 22, 1889 d. Oct. 13, 1947) married 1st Leafie Moye 11. and 2nd Esther Ellen McLawhorn 11. Emma Mae (Sept. 6, 1891 d. Dec. 16, 1957) married Levi Lafayette Nethercutt. William Marcellus Carraway (b. Aug. 24, 1842 d. Nov. 6, 1917) was a carpenter, a Civil War veteran, and served in the NC legislature in Greene County during the 1893-1894 term. William Marcellus married Leo Dicie Murphy about 1870 and according to the 1900 Census they had nine children of which only two were living in 1900. The following known children are: 1. Ollie Carraway (b. Dec. 20, 1875 d. April 24, 1920) married William B. Hobbs 2. Susan Carraway (b. 1878 d. between 1880 and 1900) 3. William Turner M. Carraway (b. July 1881 d. Nov. 1942). Several of William Marcellus Carraway's children, as well as the children of Ollie Carraway and William B. Hobbs are pictured in the William Marcellus Carraway Family photo that will also be located on the Greene County Archive Page and is currently located in the photo section on the Old Dobber's Site entitled Carraway Family. The individuals identified in that photo are - L to R: Sunie Jane Hobbs, Ollie Carraway Hobbs, (in her lap) William Marcellus Hobbs, William B Hobbs, Hettie Hobbs, William Marcellus Carraway, (in his lap) Clinton Lynwood Hobbs, William Turner M. Carraway, Dicey Murphy Carraway, Miss Jane Stepp. The photo on the Old Dobber's site came from David E. Casey, however, recently someone else gave me a photo given to them from another descendant of Sunie Jane Hobbs which is much clearer. It is helpful to use this particular photo as a starting point to identify at least one of the photos in this collection. Laura Mae Albritton's parents were Benjamin Albritton and Leora Sugg. Benjamin Albritton was the son of Wm. Albritton and Nicy Harper. Benjamin Albritton was born Feb. 13, 1841 and died April 8, 1925. He married Leora Sugg on Nov. 19, 1863. Leora Sugg was the daughter of Josiah Sugg and Mary E. Harper. One of the photos in this collection appears to be a family reunion held at the Sugg House pictured in James Creech's "History of Greene County" on page 294 (Figure 55). This house is located in Snow Hill, NC. If you know any of the individuals in these photos please contact me. ______________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
