Andrew Jackson Daniel Photo can be seen at: http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/greene/photos/daniel645nph.jpg Image file size: 57.2 Kb Pvt. (later Cpl.) Andrew Jackson Daniel was born in Greene County and was a twenty year old farmer when he enlisted in the 61st North Carolina on May 16, 1862. He was wounded in the hand at Morris Island, Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, August 26, 1863; returned to duty in November-December, 1863; and was retired to the Invalid Corps on July 22, 1864, presumably because of disability from his wound. Daniel's image presents a splendid example of an armed North Carolina Confederate. Seven-button shell jackets and M1853 Enfield rifle-muskets (caliber .577) were in common use among the state's troops, as were the style of roller buckle on his waist belt and the type of cartridge box (perhaps a Confederate copy of the Enfield model) barely visible on his left side.
