Greene County, NC - Will of Winsor Dixon ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WILL OF WINSOR DIXON Found in the Windsor Dixon Collection at Perkins Library, Duke University and was copied by Judy Geller and Ann Kahn and transcribed by Martha Marble for the Lenoir Archives. There are two versions of this Will in the Collection – one appears to be a copy of the original without a signature and the other working notes that Dixon appears to have made before writing the Will. State of North Carolina Green County I Winsor Dixon of the County and State afforesaid being weak in body but of a sound mind and disposing Memorey thanks be to Allmity God for the same do make and ordain this paper C?iting to be my last will and testament in manner and form following viz Item 1st. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Clary Dixon the following negroes one negro man by the name of gabe. One negro Woman by the name of diner. One Negro Woman by the name of bethey to her and her heirs forever with all their increase. Item 2nd. I also further reserve to the use of my beloved wife Clary Dixon the following Negroes. One negro man by the name of Jim. One negro boye by the name of Ashley. One negro Woman by the name of delpha. One negro girl by the name of jane. One negro boye by the name hymrick. One negro boye by the name of Rnowel. One girl by the name of Persey Children of said delpha during her widdowhood. Item 3rd. I also give to my wife Clarey Dixon four head of horses her choice four milck cows her choice four beads steads & Furnature her choice. Item 4th. I also reserve to the use of my wife Clary Dixon during her natural life 1 chest one buro one side-bord one large mahogney table one candle stand one dozen best sitting chairs one chest her choice. Item 4th (sic). I also leave to my wife out of the Provisions on hand a suffecing for the support of her self and family for the term of one year to be laid of by a committee appointed for that purpose Item 5th. I also give to my wife my Barouch & harness Item 6th. I leave to my wife Clary Dixon one third part of all the land that INOTE: the rest of this page was cut off but from the working notes it says – which I purchased of T. Holliday commencing at during her natural life Item 7th. I give to my Eldest daughter Mary E. Dixon all my lands that I own in the County of Lenoir buildings & improvements thereon. Also one negro woman named Nancy. One named Nicy. One negro Girl named Ataline. One boy named Tom. One Woman named R ?ozeth. one Girl by the name of Fanny. One girl named Matildy & their increase forever. Also one Cherrys table & one large white trunk. Item 8th. I give and bequeath to my son Franklin Webster Dixon the lands that I own on Sandy Run that was divided to me by my father Willis Dixon and the lands that I purchased of my brothers Thomas & Samuel Dixon to him and heirs forever. Item 9th. I give and bequeath to my four youngest Children viz Martha Amanda, Franklin Webster, Sally Malvina, Nancy Eugena Dixon all the rest and resedue of my land not before given away which includes all my Land that I bought of T. Holliday only subject to the part I have set apart to my wife during her life. Jointly and to remain undivided until it becomes necessary that is untill the Eldest shall become of age or Marry. I also give and bequeath to the four last above named Children one negro Woman named Matildy & increase. One negro boy named Octavus and Also all the Negroes and their Increase loaned by me to my beloved wife Clary Dixon. Item 10th. I give and bequeath to my son Franklin W. Dixon my book case and all my books except the School Books they are for all my Children jointley & the family Bible for my wife Clary Dixon and the desk I loaned to my wife I also give to Franklin W. Dixon & one Mahagany candle stand to him and heirs for ever. Item 11th. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Martha Amanda the burough that I have lent to my wife before mentioned. Item 12th. I give and bequeath to my daughter Sally Malvinia the large Mahagany Table before mentioned in the loan to my wife. Item 13th. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Nancy Eugena the side board before mentioned in the loan to my wife. Item 14th. It is my will and desire that the Committee appointed to lay off my wifes year Provisions set apart to my wife one cart & gear ?? and as many of my working tools Ploughs & gear as they think necessary for her Farm. Item 15. It is my will that my negro man Daniel be sold by my Executors and all my stock of every kind household and kitchen furnature working tools still apple mill firearms and all the rest of my Property of every description not before given a way by me be sold by my executors and on a credit of six months. Item 16th. It is my will that the money arising from the sale of Daniel and the property above mentioned left to be sold and the money that is in hand the notes and accounts that is now due me by my executors applied to paying all my just debts and lawfull demands and the ballnce left in the hands of my executors to be equally divided between my four youngest Children. In witness to the above riting being my last will and testament I nominte and appoint my beloved wife Clary Dixon & my affectioate brother J. H. Dixon my executors to this my will in testamoney hereof I here unto assign my name and affix my seal the ___ day of ___ in the year of our Lord 1837 There is no signature or mark on the instrument and no witnesses Additions from the working notes: 1. He mentioned his youngest sons Samuel James and Benjamin Winsor 2. He gave metes and bounds to the land to his wife – beginning at the road opposite the end of the Sandy Island Canal, upper end of the watering hole in the pasture, small field called Baker place – total of 230 acres – plus wife could have the timber 3. Mentioned his eldest daughter Mary E. Coward was wife of John H. Coward 4. The land to his eldest son Franklin was purchased from L. P. ??
