Greene County, NC - John Harper Will, 1852 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WILL OF JOHN HARPER Copy of this Will found at the NC Archives, Raleigh, NC in NC Supreme Court Case #4978 – Speight & wife vs Scarborough et al – June 1855 – Greene County. The notes on the Case will be found in a later issue of the HGS Newsletter. In the name of God amen I John Harper of the State of No. Carolina and County of Greene being of Sound disposing mind and memory; but calling to mind the uncertainty of this life do Hereby make and ordain this my last Will and Testament. First – I recomment my soul into the hands of my heavenly father, and my worldly estate I dispose of as follows viz Item 1st – I give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife Ann Harper one Negro girl named Hannah to her and her heirs Item 2nd – I lend unto my beloved Wife Ann Harper two Negroes by the names of Sally and Peter all my House Hold and Kitchen furniture, three beds excepted two Horses, two cows & calfs, one yoke oxen, and Cart, two ploughs & ?? three hoes, two axes, one riding chair and Harness, one third part of my crop, one third part of my stock of hogs, six head of sheep, ten pounds of Wool, all the sugar & coffee in the House during her life, and at her death I give the same to all my children Item 3 – I lend unto my son John Harper one Negro boy by the name of Charles during his life and at his death I give the same Negro to all his children Item 4 – I lend unto my Daughter in Law Fanney Harper Wife of John Harper three Negroes which are now in her possession by the name of Belah, Sciay?? and Mary with all there increase during her life for her sales and benefit free and clear from her Husband or any debt or demand against him and at her death I give the said three Negroes With all there Increase to her children Item 5 – I lend unto my Daughter Ann Pope two negroes by the names of Mary and Toney With all the increase of Mary during her life and at her death I give the said Negroes with all the increase of Mary to her children Item 6 – I give and bequeath unto my son Francis Harper fifty dollars to him and his heirs forever Item 7 – I lend unto my son Francis Harper one Negro Girl named Julia with all her Increase during his life and at his death I give the said Julia with all her increase to his children Item 8 – I lend unto my Daughter in law Zilpha Harper wife of Francis Harper Seven Negroes which are now in her possession by the names of Violet, Bob, Sam, Harry, Hanabah, Caesar and Mary with all the increase of Violet and Mary during her life for her sales and benefit free and clear from her Husband or any debt or demand against him and at her death I give the said Violet, Bob, Sam, Harry, Hanabel, Caesar and Mary with all the increase of Violet & Mary to her children Item 9 – I give and bequeath unto my son Ormond Harper one Negro Boye by the name of Servis to him and his heirs forever Item 10 – I give and bequeath unto my Son James Harper one Negro Boye named Guilford, one Bed and furniture, one cow and calf, three sows and pigs, twelve head of hogs & twenty five barrels of corn to him & his heirs forever. Item 11 – I leave three Negroes by the name of Rachel, Willis, and Unity & the property coming to me from the estate of William Harper (dec) together with the whole of my estate that is not heretofore given away to be sold in the usual way and the money rising from such sale to be appropriated to the payment of my just debts and the fifty dollars left to my Son Francis Harper and the balance if any to be Equally divided between my children John Harper, Ann Pope, Francis Harper, Ormond Harper and James Harper Lastly I constitute and appoint my four Sons John Harper, Francis Harper, Ormond Harper, and James Harper Executors to this my last Will and testament in Witness whereof I the said John Harper have hereunto set my hand and Seal this 8th day of October 1827 Signed John Harper Signed sealed and acknowledged in the present of Wats.
