Greene County, NC - Will of William B. Newsome, 1878 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the name of God, Amen. I, WILLIAM B NEWSOME in the county of Greene and state of North Carolina being of sound mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this life, do make this my last will and testament and form following- that is to say- I give to my beloved wife GATSY NEWSOME, my mare Ketsy and horse Pomp- and my buggy and harness- also one cow and calf- one cart and wheels- and farming tools necessary for a one horse farm- together with all my household and kitchen furniture. It is also my will and desire that my wife GATSY NEWSOME shall have supplies necessary for herself and family one year out of my estate. I also loan to my beloved wife GATSY NEWSOME a certain portion of my land on which I now live, during the term of her natural life or widowhood, namely, one field known as the new marsh from the bridge on the road down to the mouth of Ready Branch one other field known as the bridge field, also one lot known as the orchard lot and one other known as the gin house lot, to have and to hold during the term of her natural life or widowhood. ITEM 2nd I give and bequeath to my daughter EMMALISA T NEWSOME all my land lying and being in the county of Wayne in same state aforesaid, known as the GILES SMITH land, together with two-thirds of one-half of my insurance policy. I also give her my horse Tecumsa-also one cow and calf. ITEM 3rd I give and bequeath to my daughter VICEY L PARKS one-half of my insurance policy also one horse mule called Jim. ITEM 4th I give and bequeath to my son WILLIAM S NEWSOME, all my land known as the Frazier land except what I shall give to my son GILES S NEWSOME-one horse named Kelly and buggy-which he now claims-one horse mule named Jack-and one-half of the sheep-also all the balance of my stock not hereafter mentioned-my will and desire is in case of my death during the present year - that my son WILLIAM S should have and hold the present crop, known as my crop, except what is hereby disposed of to my wife GATSY, also all of the farming implements not heretofore mentioned or may not hereinafter be disposed of. ITEM 5th I give and bequeath to my son GILES S NEWSOME all of my land known as the Heath land, on the northwest side of the Snow Hill road- also fifty-two acres of the Frazier land on Bear Creek, bounded as follows, beginning at the bridge at the road and runs down said creek to the mouth of Bridge branch, then up and with the run of said branch to the mouth of the uppermost ditch then up said ditch through the marl bed, and along said ditch and drain to the road at the bridge, also one other piece of the same tract, bounded as follows, beginning at a stake near MARK SMITHS avenue and runs So. 50 3/4 East 89 1/3 poles to a Black Gum and the said Reedy Branch then up said branch with run to a black gum MARK SMITH'S corner in the mouth of a small drain, then up said drain to sweet gum then No. 26 west with MARK SMITH'S line 23 1/2 poles to a stake on the road, then up the road to the beginning, also fifty acres, which I bought of HILLARY VAUGHN, also one horse named Bob, one cow and calf, one cart and wheels, one red steer, one half of the sheep, one sow and four pigs, seven head of shoats, two weeding hoes, one shovel and one spade, one grub hoe, one set of plow gear that he now uses, also the privilege of ginning and baling his cotton at my gin. ITEM 6th I give and bequeath to my Granddaughter, ELIZABETH LEWIS, one third of one half of my insurance policy, one bed-bedstead-and furniture. I desire that WILLIAM NEWSOME pay to ELIZABETH W LEWIS, at the age of twenty-one years, two hundred and fifty, if she is living, also that GILES S NEWSOME pay to ELIZABETH W LEWIS at age of twenty-one years, the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars-should she be living, but if she should die without a lawful heir of her body it is my will that said legacy should go to my two daughters VICY and EMMALISA. ITEM 7th It is my will that my wife GATSY give each of my unmarried children, one bed, bedstead and furniture as they may marry or as they may need them, Also at her death, I desire that the property herein before given to said wife be equally divided between EMMALISA T, WILLIAM S and GILES S NEWSOME. ITEM 8th I further desire that my beloved wife, GATSY, have as many hogs as she may need for her own use. Erased- interlined before signing. I hereby constitute and appoint my son, WILLIAM S NEWSOME and my trusty friend H H BEST, executors to this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills by me made heretofore.
