Older curtolder@earthlink.net September 8, 2009, 2:41 pm Source: www.cloldergen.com Author: Curtis L. Older Documentation for Judith Starbuck (Oct 10, 1734 to Oct 25, 1830) mother of Charles Worth (June 17, 1761 to After 1850) (Most of the following material was taken from the book by Elizabeth Pearson White, John Howland of the Mayflower, Volume 1, The First Five Generations Documented Descendants Through his first child Desire Howland and her husband Captain John Gorham) Judith Starbuck was born October 10, 1734, on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts \ (or Aug. 10, 1734).(1) She was the daughter of William Starbuck and Anna Folger.(2)(3) William Starbuck was born July 22, 1699 on Nantucket Island, Nantucket, Massachusetts and died October 17, 1760. (4) (5) (6) (7) He married Anna Folger September 10, 1720. Anna Folger was born May 25, 1703, on Nantucket Island, Nantucket, Massachusetts and died September 6, 1748. (8) (9) (10) (11) Judith Starbuck married Joseph Worth Junior on December 6, 1753, on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts.(12) Joseph Worth was born on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts, 29th 9 mo. 1729, the son of Joseph and Lydia (Gorham) Worth.(13) He died in New Garden, Guilford County, North Carolina, before May 1816, the date his will was proved.(14) Joseph and Judith Worth may have gone to Barrington, Nova Scotia, around 1762 for a Joseph Worth was listed there as an American Protestant with a wife, one boy and two girls when the census was taken in 1770.(15) If so, they returned to Nantucket about 1773. Alexander Starbuck, in his History of Nantucket, states that this family "removed from the Island 29th 9 mo. 1774," before the start of the Revolutionary War.(16) On 23 September 1774, a few days before they left, Joseph Worth, Junior, weaver, and his wife Judith, of Sherborn, with Joseph Macy, blacksmith, and his wife, Mary, and with another heir, Jethro Starbuck, sold to Jethro Mitchell, cooper, land which had been given to them by their father, William Starbuck.(17) On 24 September 1774, Joseph and Judith Worth with their brother-in-law and Judith's sister, Joseph and Mary Macy, sold to William Rotch, merchant, of Sherborn, another piece of land devised to them by their father, William Starbuck.(18) On the same day Joseph and Judith Worth sold to Jonathan Burnell, merchant, a share of land "and the remaining two-fifths part is to remain to the use of our mother-in-law, Lydia Pinkham, during her natural life."(19) Lydia Pinkham was the step- mother of Judith (Starbuck) Worth and Mary (Starbuck) Macy, whose father, William Starbuck, had married second, Lydia Coleman who, after William's death had married Theophilus Pinkham.(20) In a final transaction, 8 October 1774, two weeks after the date given by Starbuck for their move to North Carolina, Joseph and Judith Worth and Joseph and Mary Macy jointly sold to William Hussey, merchant, 1/18th of one share in the Old North Warf.(21) Joseph and Judith Worth were Quakers. They were received as members of the Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina, 20th 9 mo. 1774.(22) On January 21, 1776, records show the marriage of their daughter, Eunice Worth, to William Wilson, and on November 27, 1777, their daughter, Matilda Worth, married Latham Folger.(23) When the southern part of Guilford was cut away to form Randolph County in 1779, Joseph Worth and his eldest son, Jethro, called "single," were recorded on the first tax list. Most of the Quakers, including Joseph and Jethro, refused to turn in an inventory of their property but their names were included anyway.(24) In spite of having been listed on the Randolph County tax roll in 1779, the minutes of the Guilford County Court for 1784 state that Joseph Worth, "an infirm person," was exempted from paying poll-tax "from year to year."(25) When the U. S. Census for 1790 was taken, Joseph Worth was listed in Hillsborough District, Randolph County, North Carolina, as head of a family of four males and two females.(26) On October 7, 1796. Joseph and Judith Worth were called "of Randolph County" when the New Garden Monthly Meeting recorded the marriage of their son, Silas Worth, to Matilda Macy.(27) In the spring of 1806 Joseph Worth, called "of Randolph, North Carolina, yeoman," and Judith, his wife, gave their power of attorney to Matthew Starbuck, trader, of Guilford, to sell property they owned on Nantucket, described as one- thirty-sixth part of a share in the Old Straight Wharf.(28) Elizabeth Pearson White, in her book John Howland of the Mayflower, Volume 1, The First Five Generations Documented Descendants Through his first child Desire2 Howland and her husband Captain John Gorham, on pages 729 and 730 states the following: John L. German, 2631 Kittley Rd., Wanamaker, IN 46239, submitted a photocopy of Fred E. Crowell's New Englanders in Nova Scotia [microfilm, NEHGS], page 172, with additional information for #458 Reuben Worth(5th gen), 1:588-89, #460 Joseph Worth(5th gen), 1:591-93, and #463 Thomas Worth(5th gen), 1:597-98. all three were among the sons of Joseph worth and his wife, #82 Lydia Gorham(4th gen) (Shuabael3, Desire Howland2, John1), 1:149-50. all three brothers went to Barrington, Nova Scotia, about 1762. Reuben and Joseph Worth, but not Thomas, were listed there in the census taken in 1762. Joseph was a surveyor and farmer, and was a member of the committee to locate new settlers. Joseph was still there when another census was taken in 1770, but Reuben and Thomas were missing and had returned to Nantucket. Thomas Worth was appointed to the Proprietors' Committee, 3 February 1764. Thomas and Joseph, but not Reuben, petitioned for land at Cape Sable. [See Fred E. Crowell, "New Englanders in Nova Scotia," (microfilm, NEHGS, Boston), 172.] Mr. German also found additional proof that #460 Joseph Worth5 and his wife, Judith Starbuck, had lived in Nova Scotia before returning to Nantucket, and then setting out for North Carolina. In the 1850 census records of the Southern Division of Guilford County, N.C., Joseph's son, Paul Worth6, age 77, said that he had been born in Nova Scotia [Census M432, R632: page 357, hse 1579, fam. 1578.] In another interesting item, on the 28th day 9th month 1774, Joseph Worth, Jr., requested a Certificate from the Friends at Nantucket to the Friends at New Garden, where he intended to settle, and he acknowledged his Shortness in heretofore removing to Nova Scotia without a Certificate. This entry was found in the minutes of the Nantucket Monthly Meeting and was transcribed in The Register of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of California, Herbert Folger, ed. (1917) 1:191. Mr. German is a descendant of Charles Worth whose daughter, Elizabeth Worth married David German. Mr. German's article, "David German (1796-1867) and Family of Shelby County, Indiana," won the National Genealogical Society's Family History Writing Contest and was published in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly (Dec. 1990) 78:279-98. See the additions to 1:588-89, 591-93, 597, 598 in Additions and Corrections, Part II:729-30, which follows. Curtis L. Older owes his membership in The General Society of Mayflower Descendants to Mr. John L. German who was quoted above by Elizabeth Pearson White. One day about the year 2002 while searching the Internet for clues as to the ancestors of Chesterfield Worth, a great- grandfather of Curtis L. Older, Curtis came across the website of Mr. John L. German. An e-mail response from Mr. German asked if Chesterfield Worth was the son of John Worth. This led to an exchange of a number of e-mails between Mr. German and Mr. Older. Chesterfield Worth did indeed turn out to be a son of John Worth. John Worth was a brother of Elizabeth Worth, one of John L. German's ancestors. John Worth and his sister Elizabeth Worth were children of Charles Worth, a son of Joseph Worth Junior and his wife Judith Starbuck. Joseph Worth, in his will dated 30th 9 mo. 1811, and proved in Randolph County, North Carolina, in the May term 1816, bequeathed to his beloved wife, Judith, all of his personal estate, together with one-third of the income from his real estate. He mentioned his sons, Charles, George, Paul and Silas Worth, and his daughters, Eunice Wilson and Matilda Folger. Son Paul Worth and kinsman Job Worth were named as executors. Witnesses were William Macy and Silvanus Swain.(29) Judith (Starbuck) Worth died in New Garden, Guilford County, North Carolina on October 25, 1830. The Raleigh Register, published in Raleigh, North Carolina November 11, 1830, carried this notice: "Died in Guilford Co., on the 25 ultimo, Mrs. Judith Worth, a native of Nantucket, in the 96th year of her age."(30) Children (Worth), first four born and recorded on the Island of Nantucket, Massachusetts, last three born in Barrington, Nova Scotia, all but first son mentioned in father's will:(31) i. Jethro, born 3 September 1754, died in Deep River, N.C., 8 November 1781, before his intended marriage to Mary Barnard could take place.(32) ii. Eunice, born 30 August 1756. iii. Matilda, born 14 October 1758. iv. Charles, born 17 June 1761. v. George, named in father's will. vi. Paul, named in father's will. vii. Silas, named in father's will.
