Folger, a genealogist on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts, recorded the names of the nine children of Charles and Elizabeth Worth Frye during the mid-1800s.(6) The brothers and sisters of John Worth were Lydia, Levi, Seth, Rachel, Elizabeth, Paul, Lucinda, and Rhoda. Folger labels the Charles Worth family as "descendants of the New Garden emigrants."(7) New Garden was at the present site of Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.(8) John Worth probably was born in Randolph County, North Carolina, where John's grandfather and father had numerous connections. Joseph Worth bought and sold land in Randolph County, North Carolina.(9) He died in Randolph County, North Carolina, before May 1816, the date his will was proved.(10) Three sisters of John Worth married in Randolph County, North Carolina. A marriage bond for Lydia Worth and John Rigsby was posted in Randolph County, NC, on November 13, 1818.(11) A marriage bond for Rachel Worth and Joshua Rigsby was posted in Randolph County on January 1, 1822.(12) A marriage bond for Elizabeth Worth and David German was posted in Randolph County, NC, on December 19, 1824.(13) The first marriage of John Worth was to Elizabeth Hyatt, according to the William C. Folger Manuscript.(14) No marriage record for John Worth and Elizabeth Hyatt has been found. However, evidence that John Worth had a child by his first marriage appears in census records. The U. S. Census of Indiana, 1840, Daviess County, lists one female child, age 5 and under 10 living in the John Worth household.(15) This child must have been by his first marriage, since he married his second wife in 1837. The female child is not listed in the John Worth household in the 1850 Indiana census and perhaps she died before the census was taken.(16) The 1850 Indiana census also lists a Mary Hiatt, age 60, living in the John Worth household. According to the 1850 census record, Mary Hiatt owned the land on which the John Worth household lived.(17) Mary Hiatt probably was the mother of Elizabeth Hyatt. A Campbell County, Kentucky, marriage record was found for Allen Hiatt and Polly Drysdale. The marriage date was May 3, 1817.(18) Also found was a genealogy listing that gave the name of the spouse of Allen Hiatt as Mary Polly Drysdale. The second marriage of John Worth was to Julia Ann Drysdale. They married in Rush County, Indiana, on June 5, 1837.(19) The parents of Julia Ann Drysdale were John Drysdale and Martha McGlaughlin, who were married February 15, 1809, in Montgomery County, Kentucky.(20) Rachael Ann Drysdale, born Sept. 29, 1820, in Campbell County, Kentucky, was a sister to Julia Ann. Rachael married Sandford David Turner in Rushville, Indiana, on February 15, 1838.(21) John Worth and his family lived in Daviess County, Indiana, in 1840, as did a number of individuals related to him.(22) Sanford Turner, husband of Rachel Drysdale, appears in the 1840 Daviess County, Indiana, census.(23) David German, a brother-in-law of John Worth, lived next to Sanford Turner in 1840.(24) Mary Polly Drysdale and her husband, Allen Hiatt, lived in Davies County in 1840.(25). John Drysdale also appears in the 1840 Daviess County, Indiana, census.(26) He probably was the father of Julia Ann Drysdale and the brother of Mary Polly Drysdale. William Drysdale, probably a brother of Julia Ann Drysdale, lived next to John Worth in 1840.(27) Seth Worth, a brother of John Worth, sold land that he owned in Rush County in 1839.(28) Seth is listed in the 1840 Rush County, Indiana, census.(29) However, Seth Worth also is listed in the Daviess County, Indiana, census in 1840.(30) Seth and his father, Charles Worth, are listed in Daviess County, Indiana, census in 1850.(31) Charles was listed as a member of the Seth Worth household. His age was given as 90 years.(32) Sometime after the 1850 census, Seth and his family moved to Harrison County, Missouri, where he and his wife later died.(33) It is not know where Charles Worth died or is buried. William Hiatt, perhaps a brother of Elizabeth Hyatt, was born about 1820 in Kentucky. He married Rhoda Worth, a sister of John Worth, on November 7, 1837, in Rush County, Indiana.(34) William was dead by September 1858 when a guardian was appointed for his minor heirs.(35) Rhoda (Worth) Hyatt died December 30, 1854, and is buried near Morristown in Shelby County, IN.(36) The children of John Worth and Julia Ann Drysdale were Seth, James, John C., Mary J., Elizabeth, and Chesterfield Worth as listed on the 1850 census record.(37) Another child or other children listed in the 1860 census may have been a child or may have been children of John Worth and Julia Ann Drysdale as well. John Worth lived in Shelby County, IN, in 1854.(38) Julia Ann Drysdale died April 10, 1856. She was buried in the Old Boggstown Cemetery, Shelby County, Indiana.(39) The third marriage of John Worth was to Mary Jane (Lemon) Stephens.(40) She was born October 10, 1824 at Akron, Ohio, and died October 22, 1913, in Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana.(41) The John Worth family lived in Hendricks and Montgomery counties in 1860.(42) The John Worth family lived in Montgomery County, Indiana, in 1870.(43) John Worth lived in Montgomery County, Indiana, in 1874 according to the Peoples' Directory of Business and Religious Directory of Montgomery County.(44) The Atlas of Montgomery County indicated John Worth also lived there in 1878.(45) By the time of the 1880 Indiana census, John Worth and family lived in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.(46) The John Worth letter to Hiram C. Worth dated February 1, 1886, was written at New Ross, Indiana.(47) In the letter, John Worth lists the names of Charles Worth's children as: Lida, Levi, Rachel, Seth, Betey, Paul, Lewcinda, John (himself), and Rhoda. This list concurs with that found in the Folger MS, 3:2077, listed above. Hiram C. Worth, to whom the letter was sent, was associated with the New Garden area, now Guilford College, on the west side of Greensboro, NC. Hiram C. Worth is buried in the New Garden Cemetery near the Guilford College campus.(48) Laura D. Worth was a granddaughter of Hiram C. Worth.(49) As the keeper of Quaker records at Guilford College for many years, she compiled much of the North Carolina data for the William Wade Hinshaw book, Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy.(50) She was the foremost authority in the early 1900s on Quaker genealogy in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, according to Hinshaw.(51) Laura D. Worth is buried at the New Garden Cemetery at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.(52) In his letter, John Worth states that his son, John Worth, was at Hiram C. Worth's home during the war.(53) John C. Worth was in the 120th Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.(54) The 120th Indiana unit was stationed in North Carolina from about April 1865 until the time John C. Worth was discharged at Raleigh, NC, on January 8, 1866.(55) The unit was assigned to the Department of North Carolina and was stationed at times in Durham, Raleigh, Charlotte, and Greensboro.(56) John Worth died sometime after February 1, 1886.(57) No date of death, location of death, location of burial, will, or estate papers have been found for him. Julia Ann Drysdale was born January 27, 1814, in Kentucky.(1) Her parents probably were John Drysdale and Martha McGlaughlin, who were married February 15, 1809, in Montgomery County, Kentucky.(2) Census records and other material obtained from limited research into the matter indicate that a James Drysdale Sr. probably was the father of a James Jr., John, and Mary "Polly" Drysdale.(tt) A John Drysdale and James Drysdale witnessed a will on March 29, 1816, for Henry Boyals of Campbell County, Kentucky, wife's name was Martha.(KK) The 1830 census records for John Drysdale and his presumed brother, James Drysdale Jr., indicate that only John Drysdale had any children living with him, and his wife, Martha McLaughlin, in 1830. It seems probably therefore that Julia Ann Drysdale was a daughter of John Drysdale and his wife Martha McLaughlin and that the father of John Drysdale was named James Drysdale. Additional information on the Drysdales indicate that a Rachael Ann Drysdale, born Sept. 29, 1820, in Campbell County, Kentucky, probably was a sister or cousin to Julia Ann Drysdale. Rachael married Sandford David Turner in Rushville, Indiana, on February 15, 1838.(3) A Martha Drysdale married James Collins on January 14, 1850, and also probably was a sister or cousin to Julia Ann. Information received by Curtis Older, the sender of which is unknown to me at present, indicated, "I, too, am looking for Drysdales in Rush Co. I have 3 Drysdale sisters who married in Rush Co. Rachel married Sanford Turner-15 Feb 1838, Julia married John Worth-5 June 1837, and Martha married James Collins-14 Jan 1850. They were the daughters of John & Martha McGlaughlin Drysdale, who were married 15 Feb 1809 in Montgomery Co, KY." Census and other information obtained on a William Drysdale indicates that he probably was a brother or cousin of Julia Ann Drysdale. William Drysdale was born in Kentucky, August 28, 1815, and died April 7, 1898, age 82 years, 8 months. He was buried at the Morris Cemetery located 3 miles north of Adrian, Missouri.(II) Cemetery Records of Bates County, Missouri Volume III William Drysdale married Elizabeth Earnest March 23, 1837, in Rush County, Indiana, however, no marriage record or license has been found for this couple via the Internet. Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry F. Earnest and Hannah Bitner. She was born in Sevier County, Tennessee on June 10, 1820. She died November 11, 1879, in Bates County, Missouri, at age 58.(III) Cemetery Records of Bates County, Missouri Volume III. William Drysdale indicated in the 1880 U. S. Census for Missouri that his father's birthplace was Virginia and that his mother's birthplace was Kentucky. William Drysdale and Elizabeth Earnest were the parents of twelve children, including: 1) John N. Drysdale, born May 29, 1841, died August 23, 1895, married Mary Jane Allender; 2) Henry Drysdale, born 1839, died 1907, married Mary E. Davis, wed 1863; and 3) James, born April 28, 1843, Rush County, Indiana, died March 12, 1909, Bates County, Missouri. James Drysdale married Mary Strain. Many of the William and Elizabeth Drysdale children and their spouses are buried in Morris Cemetery, Bates County, Missouri, and others are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Bates County, Missouri. William Drysdale lived next to John Worth according to the 1840 Daviess County, Indiana, census. Additional research and data is needed to determine conclusive answers as to the identity of the ancestors of Julia Ann Drysdale. Julia Ann Drysdale married John Worth in Rush County, Indiana, on June 5, 1837.(4) John Worth was born in North Carolina about 1817.(5) He was a son of Charles Worth and Elizabeth Frye.(6) The first marriage of John Worth was to an Elizabeth Hyatt, as recorded in the William C. Folger Manuscript.(7) The Folger Manuscript of three volumes is known as Genealogical Records of Nantucket Families. Folger recorded many of the Nantucket families that moved from Nantucket, Massachusetts to North Carolina in the late 1700s. Charles Worth, the father of John Worth, was born on Nantucket Island in 1761 and moved with his parents, Joseph and Judith (Starbuck) Worth Jr., and his brothers and sisters to New Garden, North Carolina, about 1775. New Garden became the present site of Guilford College on the west side of Greensboro, North Carolina. Charles married Elizabeth Frye of Stokes County, North Carolina, probably in 1799.(10) The listing of the Charles Worth family in the Folger Manuscript gives the name of the wife of John Worth as Elizabeth Hyatt. No marriage record for John Worth and Elizabeth Hyatt has been found. However, support for the marriage does appear to exist in two census records. Evidence that John Worth was the father of a child, before his marriage to Julia Ann Drysdale, appears in census records for 1840 and 1850. The 1840 U. S. Census of Indiana, Daviess County, lists one female child, age 5 and under 10 living in the John Worth household.(8) This child must have been born by 1835, prior to his marriage to Julia Ann Drysdale in June 1837. This female child is not listed in the John Worth household in the 1850 Indiana census and perhaps she died, or married, before the census was taken.(9) Additional information from the 1850 U. S. Census of Indiana, Rush County, Jackson Township, household of John Worth, appears to support a connection between John Worth and a Hyatt, or Hiatt, family. The Folger Manuscript spelled the last name of the wife of John Worth as Hyatt. The 1850 Indiana census lists a Mary Hiatt, age 60, living in the John Worth household. It seems reasonable to assume that the Folger Manuscript and the 1850 Indiana census for Rush County contained two viable ways to spell the last name of John Worth's first wife. Folger used Hyatt while the 1850 census used Hiatt. The Mary Hiatt of the John Worth household in 1850 could have been John Worth's first mother-in- law. Mary Hiatt could have been the mother of Elizabeth Hiatt, John Worth's first wife, according to Folger. Some might argue that the Mary Hiatt living in the 1850 household of John Worth, was the mother of Julia Ann Drysdale. That she had remarried after the death of her Drysdale husband and that her second spouse also had died by 1850. There appears to be significant, but incomplete evidence, to indicate the preceding was not the case. There is evidence the parents of Julia Ann Drysdale were John Drysdale and Martha McLaughlin. The 1850 census records a Martha Drysdale living with ????? who probably were her daughter and son in law. There is evidence that Allen and Mary "Polly" (Drysdale) Hiatt could have been the parents of an Elizabeth Hiatt. There is evidence John Drysdale, father of Julia Ann Drysdale, was a brother of Mary "Polly" Drysdale, the mother of Elizabeth Hiatt. All of these individuals can be closely connected, or an association shown to exist between them, through census records and marriage records. Additional information that has been found gives support to a close association between these individuals as well. According to the 1850 census record, Mary Hiatt owned the land on which the John Worth household lived.(10) A Campbell County, Kentucky, marriage record was found for an Allen Hiatt and Polly Drysdale. The marriage date was May 3, 1817.(11) Also found was a genealogy listing that gave the name of the spouse of Allen Hiatt as Mary "Polly" Drysdale. A daughter of this Allen and Mary (Drysdale) Hiatt might have been born about 1817 or 1818 and could have married John Worth in 1834 or 1835. Allen Hiatt was born about 1797 in Pennsylvania. His parents were William and Elizabeth "Betsy" Thatcher Hiatt. An 1820 census record for Allen Hiatt exists for the state of Kentucky, Fleming County, no township stated. The census indicates that Allen Hiatt and Mary Drysdale Hiatt had two daughters and one son who were under 10 years old. Since they were married in May 1817, they likely had one child in 1817 or early 1818. This child could have been named Elizabeth Hiatt. An 1830 census record exits for an Allen Hiatt household in Rush County, Indiana. The 1830 census indicates one female of 10 years and under 15. This child could have been Elizabeth Hiatt who would have turn 18 or thereabouts in 1835. The 1830 census indicates that Allen and Mary Hiatt were in Rush County by 1830. It appears the Drysdale and Worth families did not arrive in Rush County until a few years later. The 1840 Indiana census for Davies County lists Allen Hyatt as living near to John Drysdale as well as near Sandford Turner, William Drysdale, Seth Worth, David German, and John Worth. The 1840 census uses the Hyatt spelling. Hence, Hiatt and Hyatt do seem to be used interchangeably in the census records for this family. The 1840 census indicates Allen Hiatt was age 40 and under 50 and that Mary Drysdale Hiatt was age 50 and under 60. It appears that Allen Hiatt, or Hyatt, husband of Mary, died before the 1850 census was taken. There is no 1850 census record for the Allen and Mary Hiatt household. The 1850 John Worth census in Rush County, Indiana, indicates Mary Hiatt was 60 years old at that time. Allen and Mary Hiatt appear to have been in Davies County, Indiana, along with the John Worth and John Drysdale families. Additional information obtained on the Internet indicate that William Hiatt, born about 1777, married Elizabeth "Betsy" Thatcher, who was born about 1781. William and Elizabeth Hiatt came from Pennsylvania to Ohio and on to Kentucky William and Elizabeth Hiatt moved to Ohio about 1808. They then moved on to Kentucky, being in Mason, Fleming, and other counties in Kentucky. William and Elizabeth (Thatcher) Hiatt were the parents of the following children, and perhaps others who are unknown: 1) Allen, born in 1797, married Mary"Polly" Drysdale May 3, 1817, in Campbell County, Kentucky 2) Stephen, born 1798, married Lucy Morris, December 6, 1817, in Campbell County, Kentucky 3) Thatcher, born 1799, married Esther/Hester Hunt, Green, Markwell, in 1820, in Kentucky 4) Nancy, born 1803, married 1st Landon Bonham; married 2nd John Pemberton 5) Sarah/Sallie, born 1805, married Jeremiah Rice, March 24, 1824, in Greenup County, Kentucky 6) Elizabeth "Betsy", born 1807, married July 16, 1830 It seems entirely possible that Allen Hiatt and his wife, Mary Drysdale, named their first female child Elizabeth after Allen's mother, Elizabeth "Betsy" (Thatcher) Hiatt. Additional research or data is needed to determine conclusive answers to the Elizabeth Hyatt issue as well as to identify the ancestors of Julia Ann Drysdale. John Worth and Julia Ann (Drysdale) Worth and their children lived in Daviess County, Indiana, in 1840, as did a number of individuals related to them.(12) Sanford Turner, husband of Rachel Drysdale, appears in the 1840 Daviess County, Indiana, census.(13) David German, a brother-in-law of John Worth, lived next to Sanford Turner in 1840.(14) Mary Polly Drysdale and her husband, Allen Hyatt, lived in Davies County in 1840.(15). John Drysdale appears in the 1840 Daviess County, Indiana, census and lived very near to Allen Hyatt.(16) John Drysdale probably was the father of Julia Ann Drysdale and perhaps was a brother of Mary Polly Drysdale. William Drysdale, probably a brother of Julia Ann Drysdale, lived next to John Worth in 1840.(17) The children of John Worth and Julia Ann Drysdale listed in the 1850 Indiana census for Rush County, Jackson Township, were: Seth, James, John C., Mary J., Elizabeth, and Chesterfield D. Worth.(18) In 1854, John Worth and his family lived in Shelby County, Indiana.(19) Julia Ann Drysdale died April 10, 1856.(20) She was buried in the Old Boggstown Cemetery, Shelby County, Indiana. John Worth and Julia Ann Drysdale may have been the parents of children who were born between the time of the 1850 Indiana census and the date of death for Julia Ann in April 1856. The 1860 Indiana census records for the family of John Worth include 1) children from his marriage to Julia Ann Drysdale, 2) children by his marriage to his third wife, Mary Jane (Lemon) Stephens, who he married on January 1, 1857, in Shelby County, Indiana, and 3) children from the prior marriage of Mary Jane Lemon to ? Stephens.(21). Mary Jane Lemon was born October 10, 1824 at Akron, Ohio, and died October 22, 1913, in Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana.(22) and was buried at Battle Ground, Tippicanoe County, Indiana. Indiana State Board of Health, Death Certificate, Mary J. Worth, Tippicanoe Co., Indiana, 22 October 1913 The John Worth family lived in Hendricks and Montgomery counties in 1860.(23) The John Worth family lived in Montgomery County, Indiana, in 1870.(24) John Worth died sometime after February 1, 1886.(25) No date of death, location of death, location of burial, will, or estate papers have been found for him.
