N.C. General Assembly Sessions Records Box 3 Nov-Dec 1811 Nancy McKINNEY of Guilford Co. N.C. wife of George McKINNEY sheweth "that she intermarried with the said George in the year 1794 when he was an itinerant preacher in the Methodist Church, who continued a local preacher in the same for a number of years after being married. During cohabitance he conducted himself as an affectionate husband, taking all necessary care for the support of his family and at the same time was respected as a useful preacher in said Church." About four or five years ago he abandoned his former habits of taking care of his family and attending to his duties of Religion. To the distress of your petitioner and family, he has ever since paid little care towards their support. He has taken to gambling and intoxication and has destroyed almost all they had for subsistence and has often absconded from the bed and board of your petitioner. Were it not for the help of friends and relations of your petitioner who bestowed their charity upon her and her children, the latter would have come to suffering circumstances. With no hope of a reformation, your petitioner prays an act securing to her all such estate as she may hereafter acquire by her own industry, or by gift from the claims of her husband and his creditors." Subscribed to by eight supporters of her petition. "Divorce and Alimony GRANTED!"
