Having been informed that the British had left Hillsborough and were in pursuit of General [Andrew] Pickens’s militia, Williams marched ‘cross the country’ to try to join forces with Pickens and Colonel [Henry] Lee at High Rock Ford. Lee and Pickens moved in ‘a different direction’ than Williams had expected, however, and instead of meeting them, he nearly ran into ‘a large body of the enemy,’ which was camped on the road from Hillsborough to High Rock Ford. As the British force was larger than his own, and Williams needed ammunition, he ‘filed off by the right’ to avoid them. He learned that Pickens, Lee and Colonel [William] Moore are a few miles ahead of him. He cannot ‘fall in with them,’ but has informed them as to where he is. ‘If we come together I think hostilities might increase.’” “He has tried to ‘regulate’ his motions by the enemy’s; hopes NG is not ‘surprised’ that he is ‘so high up the country.’ From the direction of the enemy’s march, Williams thinks Lord Cornwallis will try to prevent a junction between NG and Colonel [William] Campbell. ‘That is to fight ou separately, or to go off suddenly towards Camden. The former is most probable.’ He supposes NG will be near ‘Hart’s Old Store this evening,’ and expects to hear from NG before morning. Does not know if the enemy have marched yet; will inform NG when he does know. A short time ago, Williams met Colonel [Lewis] Morris and Major [Ichabod] Burnet, who have left for High Rock Ford ‘to make discoveries.’ The ammunition that NG sent has not arrived yet. Williams needs it ‘exceedingly.’ ALS (MiU-C) 3 pages.
