Dear General, Ever proud of your esteem, I was perhaps too tenacious of your approbation, and therefore suspiciously interrogated Major Burnet respecting your sentiments of my conduct. Conscious of having done everything in my power, I was only apprehensive that there might appear to you a seeming delay in our passing the river…” “We moved about three miles last evening. The British Army, about seven miles off, remains where it was. While Lord Cornwallis keeps his present position, like a bear with his stern in a corner, I cannot attack him, but at tooth and nail. We have two days provisions and are ready for action. General Pickens has informed you that our riflemen abandon us daily. The sooner we can have a field day after your forces are collected, the better. I am, dear General, with the greatest respect and esteem, most truly yours. O. H. Williams.
