Williams, Camp [at Charles Bruce’s], NC, ‘Sunday Morn, 9 o’clock, 11th February, 1781. Is ‘seven miles northwest’ of Guilford. Received a report ‘this morning’ that the British had advanced six miles from Salem by early ‘yesterday’ afternoon. Is not sure of their route, but ‘will search diligently’ for them. As he expects Colonel [Banastre] Tarleton to pursue ‘the baggage with Captain Marbury at Dan [River],’ Williams ‘will move in that direction.’ ALS (Greene Papers DLC) 1 page. {Colonel Otho Williams was appointed to replace General Daniel Morgan to command all the Light Infantry and Cavalry of the army.] In a footnote, from Lee’s Memoirs, 1: 277, Colonel Henry Lee, whose legion served as the detachment’s rear guard, described its initial march from Guilford Courthouse as follows: “The greater the distance between the main body of the army and the light troops, the surer would be Greene’s retreat. Williams, therefore, soon after breaking up from Guilford Courthouse on the 10th, inclined to the left, for the purpose of throwing himself in front of Lord Cornwallis. The movement was judicious, and had an immediate effect. His lordship, finding a corps of horse and foot close in front, whose strength and object were not immediately ascertainable, checked the rapidity of his march to give time for his long extended line to condense.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/guilford/military/revwar/letters/bruce59gmt.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ncfiles/ File size: 2.0 Kb
