Dear General, In consequence of your letter this forenoon, I have put my troops in readiness to move.” “Your letter of this evening informs me that you had postponed the march of the army to the next day. I shall nevertheless move my infantry tomorrow 8 miles on the road to Cross Creek and follow the ensuing day with the cavalry.” “Captain Oldham had better march the direct road from Ramsey Mill to Cross Creek and join my infantry at McIntosh’s. I understand a volunteer company of mounted militia from Amelia County has joined the army. As they will be useless, I wish they were ordered to join me. My sole object is to make use of their apprehensions and convenience so as to get their best horses for the use of my cavalry and permit them to return home. This could be effected in the course of one weeks service with proper address.” “The militia company now with me have furnished twelve riflemen to act with me for three months on condition that the remainder be discharged.” “I have bargained on these terms and the Captain will wait on the Adjutant General tomorrow.” “I am much obliged by the expedition you have honored me with conducting. I hope my exertions may meet with your approbation that I may answer fully your expectations. I have the honor to be most affectionately your obedient servant. Henry Lee, Junior. ALS (MiU-C).” From footnote: “Lee’s troops were serving with the light infantry of Colonel Otho Williams, who gave William Shaffer’s on Stoney Creek as his location for the night of March 4. The expedition was presumably an attack on Tarleton’s Legion.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/guilford/military/revwar/letters/paisley67gmt.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ncfiles/ File size: 2.4 Kb
