Williams, on our march near Rhoads [John Rhode’s, NC], Sunday [11 February 1781] 3 o’clock. Dear General, Uncertain of the enemy’s motions I waited for information at Bruce’s till one hour ago. I sent 2 parties of dragoons and some countrymen [meaning men from Guilford County who knew their way around this countryside] different roads for intelligence.” “Accident informed me the enemy were within six or eight miles of my Quarters. I detached Colonel Lee with a troop of dragoons and put the rest of the Light Troops in motion to cross the Haw River at a bridge. Colonel Lee met the enemy’s advance, s(tood) a charge and captured 3 or 4 men whom I send you. They say Lord Cornwallis and the whole British Army preceded by Colonel Tarleton’s Legion is close in our rear.” “I will endeavor to avoid him. The cavalry wait to cover. Colonel Lee and the infantry are crossing the bridge. With esteem, yours, O. H. Williams.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/guilford/military/revwar/letters/rhodes60gmt.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ncfiles/ File size: 1.6 Kb
