Of Michigan, Microfilm Reel 6, Officers Of The Salisbury District To Gen. Nathanael Greene, 5 March, 1781: On March 5th, 1781, the following letter-petition was written by the field officers of the militia of General Nathanael Greene, and included the signatures of Colonel James Martin and Lt. Col. John Paisley. The letter was written from Col. Andrew Pickens’ camp at Shearer’s [or Sherors]: “A Petition from the field officers of the District of Salisbury now in service to the Honorable Major General Greene, commander in chief of the Southern Department of the American Army. Sir, “We, the subscribing, considering the militia situation of our country and the difficulty our district has labored under for want of commanding officer since the fall of General Davidson, do offer this our humble petition; that another be approved in his room. And as we repose special confidence in Colonel Thomas Polk of Mecklenburg County as a gentleman qualified for such an important trust, it is our request that he be appointed to take the command of the above district.” “Your compliance with this our request will lay underlasting obligations.
