In March following being by Dan River at the house of Colonel James Martin of the militia, I went as a volunteer horseman under the said Col. Martin with the militia who were then called out to act against the British and a class of people who were called Regulators who were assembled in Cross Creek in the lower part of the said state. We joined other troops until we had about 300 and then fell in with Col. Alexander Martin who was said to have with him about 1200 tested troops. We marched on and with General Moore and Col. Caswell defeated them at a certain bridge between 80 and 100 miles from said Dan River where we started from. We took a number of prisoners. I was out one month on this expedition. In April following, I returned to New Jersey, my native place.” Hunterdon County, NJ, February 5, 1833: “First being in the State of North Carolina (spending at an old friend’s) the winter in the year 1776, named James Martin, a colonel in the militia living by Dan River, the British troops and a set of men called Regulators, their adherents were collecting together in the lower part of the state, the militia being called out on duty, I went as a volunteer Light Horseman with the said Col. James Martin, between 80 and 100 miles to Cross Creek where General Moore and Col. Caswell defeated them at a certain bridge. I was at the taking of several prisoners. Was out in the service for one month. In May following, I returned to New Jersey, my native place, about the 1st of July 1776.” Additional Comments: The remainder of his service took place from New Jersey and is not trancribed here.
