State of Tennessee SS. Wilson County On the 27th day of December l832, personally appeared before me Thomas S. Green an acting Justice of the peace within and for said County of Wilson, Charles Breden a resident of said County of Wilson and State of Tennessee, aged seventy nine years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress, passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United State and served as herein stated, under the following named officers-- At the time he entered the service of the United States, he was a citizen of Guilford County, and being called out, he served a tour of three months as a sergeant in the Company Commanded by Capt. Robert Bell -- The Regiment to which he was attached was Commanded by Col. James Martin Col. Commandant, Lieutenant Col. John Parsley & Major Thomas Blair he was mustered into the service at Guilford Courthouse North Carolina, marched from thence through Salisbury to the Catawba [?] River thence up the same & crossed the French Broad River at Sarasmano [?] -- continuing next to the valley towns from thence returned home having served a tour of 3 months was regularly discharged. Genl. Rutherford commanded the expedition. He is now aged and very infirm, and cannot state with certainly the time he first entered the United States service -- but his best recollection and belief is that it was in the summer of the year 1776. [page 2] Shortly after this I served another short tour as a guard in taking prisoners from Guilford to Hillsborough -- was on duty eight days at least. He was again called upon to serve a tour of three months but was discharged at the end of two months -- this was called the Raft Swamp expedition, and he was in the Company of horse commanded by Capt. Daniel Gillespie. Cannot state with certainly in which year this service was rendered but believes it was in the year 1777-- In the course of the next year (as I believe) I served another tour of one month (though was called out for three months) in the company commanded by Capt. Flack of Guilford County, marched southardly against the Tories Some time after the last mentioned service I was called upon to go against the Tories, in the Company commanded by Capt. Bell, marched about one hundred miles ( . . .) to Cross Creek & was in actual service ( . . .) ten days at least. At another time he servied a tour of eight days in General Greens army & part of that time as a guide for the troops. After that again I served fifteen days or upwards in the Company commanded by Capt. John Gillespie & principally against the Tories to the South. According to his Fathers family Register he was born the 16th April 17 [1753 ?] & he was a citizen of Guilford County North Carolina where he continued to reside until the year 1796 when he removed to Robertson County in the State of Tennessee -- resided [?] in Robertson County until the year 1819 when he moved to Wilson County Tennessee, where he has resided ever since [?] -- His memory is so bad (being impaired by old age & infirmity) [page 3] that he cannot undertake [?] to give the dates of the different services above ( . . .) any discharges in writing -- & has no other documentary evidence [?] to sustain his declaration -- he is however intimately acquainted with Capt. William Donnell & Mr. George Donnell Citizens of this County, who were his fellow soldiers part of the time above mentioned, & by them he can prove positively some part of his services & their belief of the balance as claimed to have been performed by him -- He was a militia man the whole [time] he served in the Revolutionary War -- & was not in any battle -- but was in some skirmishes. He knew Genl. Green & Major John Donnell ( . . .) John Nelson, Capt. Hadley, Capt. Forbus [?], Capt. John Rankin of the Regular Army. He hereby relinquishes every claim whever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension rool of the Agency of any state. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid. Witness his Thomas S. Green Justice of CHARLES X BRADEN the peace mark We William Donnell & George Donnell of the County of Wilson & State of Tennessee hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Charles Breden who has subscribed & sworn to the above declaration, that we believe him to be seventy nine years of age and we know that he served three months against the Indians in the Company commanded by Capt. Robert Bell -- and we believe he served the tours mentioned in his declaration, (being a man of veracity) & he is respected and believed in the neighbourhood where ( . . .) ----------------------------------------------------------------- [On a separate page, in a different hand, often illegible:] Mary Breden Born on Monday [?] the 10 [?] 1760 [?] Robert Breden Born on Sonday May the 17 178 ( . . .)
