We were there under the command of Captain Arthur Forbis. A few moments after our men were killed, the Battle of Guilford Courthouse commenced, being about 9 to 11 o’clock in the forenoon. The battle was not entirely over until sometime in the afternoon. During the action I received a wound in my leg. We retired after the battle to a place called the Ironworks, where the American Army again collected under General Greene. From the Ironworks, I was obliged to return home owing to the wound in my leg. In this service I volunteered for six months. Some time after my leg got well, I entered the service again to go against the Cherokee Indians under the command of Colonel Jno. Pacely [John Paisley] and Captain Henry Whitesell. We marched to the head of French Broad River and Pigeon River. On the west side of Pigeon River we came up with the Indians. After a few fires, the Indians fled. Moved from NC to Christian County, Kentucky, lived there about ten years, moved from thence to the territory of Illinois in 1811, and have lived this territory and state ever since. How were you called into service? Were you drafted, were you a volunteer or were you a substitute for someone? I volunteered. State the names of some of the officers who were with the troops where you served, such regiments as you can recollect, and the general circumstances of your service. General Greene is the only regular officer I can recollect. All I can recollect from this remote period, I have already stated before the first question was propounded. Did you ever receive a discharge from the service, and if so, what has become of it? I did not receive a discharge. My captain died about two weeks after the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, and quitting the service in consequence of my wound, I never applied for one… File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/guilford/military/revwar/pensions/chaffen449gmt.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ncfiles/ File size: 3.6 Kb
