Mathew Locke in the line of the states troops of north Carolina for the term of 3 months and that he continued to serve in the line for 3 months when he was duly discharged in Salisbury, North Carolina.” “That he, the said William Gannon, Senior, also enlisted for the term of 12 months on the 1st day of January 1781 in the state of North Carolina in a company commanded by Captain William Coles in a regiment commanded by Col. Mathew Locke, marched to Catawba under Captain Reed, under whom he was detached to go to Col. Wade’s farm to bring corn for the army, which was pulled and husked by the corps, say about 300 bushels. Returned to Catawba about the last of January and joined Captain Cole’s company in the regiment commanded by Col. Linton and was in the Battle of Catawba [more commonly known as the Battle of Cowan’s Ford] on the 1st day of February 1781.” “After the said battle, marched under Captain Lowe in Col. Linton’s regiment commanded by Col. Washington and was in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Then was detached under Captain Coles in the regiment commanded by Col. Lofton, marched to ?Hughanne and whipped the Tories and took 150 prisoners and conveyed them to Salisbury jail, of whom two was hung and one was shot. In the said last engagement, he received a wound in the head. From Salisbury, we marched to Camden in Captain Lowe’s company in the regiment commanded by Col. Linton under General Greene. Was in the Battle at Camden, drove the British at the Eutaws. Col. Linton and Captain Lowe commanded at the Brick House in the Battle of the Eutaws. We took 500 prisoners and conveyed them to Salisbury. Captain Lowe still commanded a company. The regiment, he thinks, was commanded by Col. Sharp, but is not positive. He continued to serve in the North Carolina line until the end of said 12 months service, for which service he received a discharge from Col. Mathew Locke signed by Spruce McCoy, General Greene’s aid- de-camp, which with his former discharge for 3 months is lost.” “He states that he was in his time of service in the following battles: First, the battle of Gates’ Defeat at Sutton’s House, in South Carolina. Second, the Battle of Catawba [Cowan’s Ford] in North Carolina where General Davis was killed. Third, the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in said state of North Carolina. Fourth, at the Battle of Camden in South Carolina, where Lord Rawdon was defeated. Fifth, at the battle of Eutaw Springs in said last named states, where General Washington [he meant Colonel Washington] was taken prisoner and in several skirmishes during his last said term of service. That he was kept in the limits of the states on North and South Carolina during his whole terms of service.” “That he was born in Ireland on the 1st day of February, 1758. Has no register of his age.
