Enlisted in Guilford County, North Carolina in the fall of seventy-five or –six, in the company commanded by George Davis for nine months, of the regiment commanded by Colonel Alexander Martin part of the time, and part under Colonel Nash or Ash. That he continued to serve in said corps in the service of the United States until the end of said term of time enlisted, when he was discharged from service in Charleston, South Carolina in August following said enlistment. That he was in the battle at Charleston, or rather, engaged in cannonading and keeping the enemy under? their lines; and that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support, and that discharge is lost and he has no other evidence now in his possession or power of ?proving services. Pike County, state of Ohio} Be it remembered, that John Halladay, on the 14th day of October in the year of our Lord, 1822, personally appeared in open court, being the court of common pleas for the county of Pike in the state aforesaid, the said John Halladay, aged 67 years, resident of the county of pike and state of Ohio, doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows: This deponent enlisted as a private soldier in Captain George Davidson’s company in Colonel Nash’s regiment in the state of North Carolina on the Continental establishment and served six months. Some time after this deponent enlisted in Captain Thomas McCrory’s company and served with him about three months, and then hired one Benjamin Thomas as a substitute during the war, and the discharge which this deponent obtained has been lost or destroyed. And I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not since that time by gift, sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an Act of Congress… And that I have not, nor has any person in trust for me any property or securities or contracts or debts due to me, nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed by me subscribed, viz: One horse, one colt, one plough, one mattock and wedge, two kettles and hooks, one loom and tackling, one frying pan, two ovens, one axe, two? doz.? head of cattle, one cupboard and furniture, two beds and furniture, one trunk, one pair of steelyards, one log chain, two pair of horse gears, and one pair of spreaders. This deponent further states that he has no trade; his occupation when he has been able to work as been that of a farmer. That his family consists of his wife who is 67 years of age and very infirm, and two grandchildren, to wit: Halladay Wiley aged between 10 and 11 years of age, and Melinda Wiley, between 9 and 10 years of age, and that this affiant is so infirm that he is not able to support himself and his family by manual labor. This affiant further states that in addition to the schedule above, he holds three notes of hand amounting to $44.00 and is indebted $112.00. That the value of the property mentioned in said schedule together with the notes amounts to $224 deducting therefrom the sum this affiant owes, leaving a balance in his favor of all the property of every description he owns or possesses, $112, and further this deponent saith not.
