All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/ncfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Nancy Poquette npoq@hotmail.com February 12, 2007, 2:18 am Pension Application Of Richard Hanks, Nat’l Archives Series M804, Roll ____, Application #R4570 Lincoln County, North Carolina} Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, October term, 1832 On this first day of November, personally appeared in open court before the court now setting, Richard Hanks, a resident in the county of Lincoln and state of North Carolina, aged 71 years, who, being duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration…: Richard hanks ?swears? that from information received of his father, that he was born in the county of Amelia, state of Virginia. That he was 16 years of age when he was drafted into the service. [Page is torn across here. May be a section missing.] He has no record of his age. He has lived in Guilford County North Carolina ever since the war. Lived in Guilford County, NC when called into service. Volunteered. Was in the Battle of Guilford. He received a discharge from Colonel Lopp and lost after he came to Lincoln County. Richard Hanks, his mark Lincoln County, North Carolina} Richard Hanks of the county and state aforesaid, amends his declaration and maketh oath that he volunteered in the militia cavalry service in the July preceding the Guilford battle under Captain Lopp [or Sopp] (who pressed a horse from his father and gave him a ticket for the horse, to be paid after the war). That he remained in service until the July following. The object of the service he was engaged in was to suppress Tories. After joining Captain Lopp, they scouted through the western counties of said state, and had a skirmish with said Tories near Salem, NC at a place called the Hollows, where Captain Lopp was promoted to the colonelcy, and Captain Botenhammer placed in command, and continued scouting as before under Lopp until the Guilford Battle where they were engaged. His company was ordered to engage the British at the left wing. After the battle they pursued the British army and continued to scout there and in the country through which they marched, and in July, was discharged after a service of 12 months. His discharge he has lost. He volunteered for no particular term of service, as Captain Lopp under whom he volunteered procured a [there is likely to be a page missing here, as the sentences do not match up] …he could to volunteer, their object being to keep down Tories, with whom were some British. He does not know the superior officers under whom he serves, but thinks that General Pickens ordered Lopp to raise his troops for the before mentioned objects. The Tories committed great depredations and was necessary to suppress them when doing any mischief and to intimidate them and ___ ___. Sworn to and subscribed the 20th day of jluy, 1834. Gaston County, NC} Be it known that on this 31st day of December, 1851 before the undersigned, a justice of the peace in and for the county and state aforesaid, personally appeared Martha Holland, a resident of said county and state, and made oath according to law, that she is the daughter of the identical Richard Hanks who made application for a pension…and that she has been informed that the said pension ought to be allowing, and that she is directly interested as a claimant in said pension, etc. Martha Holland, her mark.
