All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/ncfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Nancy Poquette npoq@hotmail.com March 31, 2007, 8:31 pm Pension Application Of Adam Hart, Nat’l Archives Series M804, Roll ____, Application #S46576 State of North Carolina, Guilford County} I, Adam Hart, aged 67 years, do upon oath testify that about or in the years 1776 or ‘77, I enlisted or entered the service as a private for the term of during the war in the 1st regiment commanded by Colonel Dixon, who afterward appointed me to serve as a wagoner, and that I continued in the service of a wagoner aforesaid under various officers, to wit: first said Dixon, the Major McCree [McCrea], Colonel Thomas Donaho, and last under Colonel Litle [Lytle] until the close of the war, and that I continued in the service aforesaid until the close of the war, when I was promised to be regularly discharged from the said 1st regiment commanded by Colonel Lytle of the North Carolina line, and when I was a private or wagoner, aforesaid, Colonel Lytle dismissed me from the service at Guilford Old Courthouse, called Martinsville about at the end of the War of the Revolution, and said, “I am busy in giving discharges to those who live a great way off. You and I live near together, ____ home now and ?in a while and come to Hillsborough ___ [looks like initials for cth, or courthouse] and I will give you your lawful discharge.” Accordingly, I did so, and went to Hillsborough and found him intoxicated, and unable to do my business, I went a second time f___ [smudge] discharge, but found he was dead. I further declare that I have never received a warrant for the county land promised to me on the part of the United States, nor have I assigned or transferred by claim in any manner whatever. Therefore,, know all men by these presents, that I, Adam Hart aforesaid, do hereby constitute and appoint Augustine H. Sheppard to be my true and lawful attorney, for me and in my name, to demand and receive from the Secretary of War of the United States, a warrant for the quantity of land due to me as aforesaid; and my said attorney is hereby fully authorized and empowered to constitute and appoint one or more substitutes or attorneys under him for the special purposes above expressed. In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my mark and seal, this 17th day of January, 1829. Adam, his mark, Hart. I, Daniel Apple, aged 65 years, and George _____, aged 62 years, do upon oath, declare, that I have been long acquainted with Adam Hart, who has subscribed the above declaration in my presence, and well know that he is the identical person he therein represents himself to be, and further, I do know and believe that he did perform the military service therein stated. Signed George ____ and Daniel Apple, his mark. A typewritten letter dated 1929 to one of his descendants in Carlisle, Indiana stated that he was allowed pension from March or May 2, 1829, and that he moved to Floyd County, Indiana, time not stated, he died July 27, 1847, and that there were no family referred to.
