GUILFORD COUNTY, NC - MILITARY - Sherwood Kenneday, Revolutionary War Pension Application --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- [Sheet 1] State of North Carolina } November Term of 1832 Davidson County } Court of Pleas & quarter Sessions On this fifteenth day of November AD 1832 Personally appeared in open Court before the Trustees of the Court of Pleas and quarter Sessions now sitting Sherwood Kenneday - a resident of Davidson County and State of North Carolina aged about Seventy two years who being duly Sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obain the benefits of the Act of Congress passed June the 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United States in the war of the Revolution in the month of November Seven- teen Hundred Seventy Eight he then living in the State of North Carolina Guilford County That he became a Volunteer for five months in Captain Enoch Davis'es Company Col. Locks Regiment Gen. Rutherford being commander that they Rendezvoused at Salisbury N.C. and there were march on toward Charleston, S.C. and encamped at Purisburgh That Gen. Lincoln with his Regulars were there from thereon Gen. Rutherford marched his troops on to the Savannah River to a place called The Three Sisters that there they made Breastwork and placed the Cannon in order for Battle and every preparation of Defence that they lay in that Situation a while and no Enemy appearing to attack them Rutherford moved up the river in order to Join Gen. Ash who with his troops were on the west side of the river in the neighborhood of Brier Creek that as they was marching up the river Col. Alexander Pervard made declaration that he wanted Riflemen to Join him and immediately cross the river This deponent States that he and Several Others Volunteered and crossed the River that when they came to Gen. Ash's Brigade Col. Litles men were cleaning their guns expecting an Ingagement which took place immediately [Sheet 2] That Col. Pervard and his men Joined Col. Lytle's Infantry - who he thinks amounted to about two Hundred & fifty that Col. Pervard marched the whole of them into the field of Battle at Brier Creek. That Gen. Briant comman- ded the action in person that at one time in the action Pervard and his men were nearly surrounded by the Enemy that some of Rutherfords Horse got over the river in time to Share in the action that after the Battle was Over he Saw Blood and hair - on Col. Pervards Sword that he and the rest of Rutherfords men that had Been in the Battle recrossed the River and Joined their own Standard and were marched down the river to the white House where at the Expiration of their term of Service he Received a discharge signed by his Captain Enoch Davis which is herewith transmitted. And further this applicant states that in the fall of the year Seventeen Hundred and Eighty he then living in Randolph County N.C. he was Drafted for three months and put into Capt. John Johnsons Company Col. Colyers Reg. which Rendezvous at Bells Mill on Deep River that they then marched to Salisbury N.C. where Col. Jonathan Harper took the command instead of Colyer that Gen Butler was commander in Chief. That he this Deponent acted as Orderly Sergant in Johnson Company the whole three months at the end of which time he received a Dis- charge Signed his Capt. that some time after his return home Capt Johnson came to the House of this deponent and wanted said discharge that he let him have it and that he has not seen it since that the Capt has been Dead for a number of years .and it cannot be procured. And further that he knows of no person that he can prove the above three months Service by Only Mr Daniel Merrill of Randolph County, N.C. And he further States that according to the account given him of his age by his parents he was born October the 14th AD 1760--- [Sheet 3] In the State of Virginia Halifax County that he came in Guilford County N.C. in 1777. That he has resided since the Revolution in the counties of guilford, Randolph, Rowan, and Davidson, in which he now resides ------- That he has not made application for a pension of any time only the present, and that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state --- And further this depon- ant Sayeth not -- Sworn to and Subscribed in open Court the day above written. Mock Clk } The Ashley Swaim a Clergyman Residing in the County of Davidson N.C. and Samuel Copell Residing in the County and State aforesaid do hereby Certify that we are well acquainted with Sherwood Kenneday, who has Subscribed and sworn to the above declaration and that we believe him to be Seventy two years of age, that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a Soldier of the Revolution and that we Concur in that opinion ------------ Sworn and Subscribed the day and year aforesaid ------ D. Mock Clk Ashley Swain {SEAL} Saml Cecil {SEAL} And the Said Court do hereby declare their opinion after the inves -tigation of the matter and after puting the Interrogatories by the war department that the above applicant was a Revolution -ary Soldier and served as he States, and the Court further Cer -tified that it appears to them that the Ashley Swaim who has Signed the preceeding Certificate is a Clergyman and Resident in the County of Davidson N.C. And that Samuel Copell who has also Signed the same is a Resident in the same County and state and is a Creditable person and that their State- -ments is entitled to Credit. [Sheet 4] North Carolina } Personally appeared in open Court This Davidson County } 15th day of Nov A.D. 1832 Dan Merrill of Randolph County N.C. aged Seventy eight years who often being Duly sworn according to law Deposeth and Saith that he has Examined the above Declaration made by Sherwood Keneday for a pension for the three months when at Salisbury N.C. Which he declares just and true he this deponent having Served in the same Company the same term of time with the said Kenneday and that he also Received a Discharge from the same Capt Johnson and further This Deponent states that in the first of the year 1778 Capt Enoch Davis with the major part of his company Staid one night at his fathers when on his way to the South that his brother John Merrill was one of Davises Soldiers and went on with him -- and further this Deponent Saith not Sworn & Subscribed to in open Court the day and date above writen-- Sworn & Subscribed in open Court } Daniel Merrill (SEAL} the 13th of Nov 1832 } D. Mock Clk [Sheet 5] State of North Carolina } Court of Pleas & quarter Davidson County ------- } Sessions May Term 1833----- Personally appeared in open Court Sherwood ----- Keneday who after being Duly Sworn according to Law Deposeth & Saith that in ammendment to the Declaration by him made at the Nov Term Last held for this County in order to obtain a pension for his Services as a Soldier In the War of the Revolution and in answer to the objection made by the pension Committee In the 7th queary is That he hereby Relinquishes Every Claim to any other pension only the one under the Act of June 7th A D 1832 -- and that by Virtue of said Act of Congress he - claims a pension for Eight - months service three of which he was orderly Sergeant for Capt Johnson Company - and that his name is not on the pension role of the agency of this State or any State in the union -------- answer to query the 17th (objected) - This applicant Makes Oath That, In addition to those already qualified In the aforenamed Declaration he will State the names of Some of his Neighbors and Acquaintances that he thinks will Concur In opinion of his Service In the War of the Revolution & In the Neighborhood Belief of the same Viz: Zebulon Hunt Solomon Davis Jacob Brunell William Piggott Joshua Lee Esquires to? the?
