Pension Application Of Rhodeham Martin, Nat’l Archives Series M804, Roll __, Application #W9907
Gibson County, Tennessee}
	On this 24th day of April, 1833, personally appeared, Rhodeham Martin, 
in open court now sitting, the Circuit Court for the aforesaid county and 
state, being a court of record, _______ Clark, a resident of said county and 
state, aged seventy five years, who being first duly sworn according to law, 
doth on his oath make the following declaration…:

	That he entered the service as a volunteer in the army of the United 
States in the year before Cornwallis was taken, and served in the regiment of 
the ____ line under the following named officers, viz., Colonel Pacely 
[Paisley], Major John McAdo [McAdow or McAdoo], Captain Peter O’Neil [O’Neal], 
and that he entered the service of the united States on a first tour in the 
month of January, in the year as above, and served three months; and that he 
entered the service the second tour in the month of November in the year 
thereafter, and served three months, and left the service in the month of 
January or the first of February in the year thereafter.

…and that was in a battle against the British [against whom he went out] at 
Whitesell’s Mills on the Reedy Fork of the Haw River in the state of North 
Carolina, Guilford County, and that he resided in said state of North Carolina 
in Guilford County, where he resided when he entered the service, and that he 
entered the service and performed the same as a volunteer as before mentioned, 
and that his services were performed altogether in the state of North Carolina. 
That he entered the service of the United States at in Guilford County and 
first marched to Bell’s Mills and there was stationed; from thence to 
Ramsaur’s. The number of regiment or company not recollected; and says that 
Colonel Moore was also in the tour of services at the same time, and served as 
officer of the day at the Battle of Whitesell’s Mills; and that Major Donahoo 
was also in the same tour of service. He further says that he has no 
documentary evidence owing to the loss of his discharge, whereby he can 
identify his services. He hereby relinquishes, et…

The following are interrogatories propounded to the applicant for a pension on 
account of his services as a volunteer in [as] a Revolutionary soldier.

1st: When and in what year were you born?
Answer: in Fairfax, Virginia in the year 1761.

2nd Have you any record of you age and if so, where is it?
I have none and my evidence of my age on what I recollect of my father’s family 
record.

3rd Where were you living when called into service? Were you drafted; did you 
volunteer, or were you a substitute?
Answer: I lived in Guilford County, North Carolina when I entered the service, 
and I went out as a volunteer. 

5th State the names of some of the Regular Officers who were with the troops 
where you
served. 
Answer: Colonel Moore and Major Donahoo were in the same service.

Gibson County, Tennessee}
	On this 19th day of November, 1853, personally appeared before me, a 
justice of the peace within and for the county and state aforesaid, Jane 
Martin, aged about 54 years being duly sworn according to law, declares that 
she is the widow of Rhodeham Martin, deceased, who was a private in the army of 
the Revolution, which will fully appear by the rates of the war department and 
exhibited herein[?] and made part of this. She further states that she was 
married to the said Rhodeham Martin in the said county of Gibson and state of 
Tennessee on the 3rd day of September, 1840, by one William Shane, esq., then 
an acting justice of the peace for said county, and that her name before her 
said marriage was Jane [looks like Affix.] That her said husband died in said 
county of Gibson on the 13th day of February, 1853 and that she is still a 
widow. She here files an exhibit [several unreadable words] She makes this 
declaration for the purpose of  obtaining any pension to which she may be

Attached is a very faint marriage license and her maiden name is too faint to 
read.
