GUILFORD COUNTY, NC - MILITARY - John McBride, Revolutionary War Pension Application ----¤¤¤¤---- Transcribed by Alton J. (Jack) Hendrick Plano, TX July 17, 2002 State of North Carolina Court of Pleas Guilford County Quarter Session August Term 1832 On this 20th day of August AD 1832 personally appeared in open court before the Court of Pleas and Quarter Session for the County of Guilford now sitting JOHN MC BRIDE a resident of Guilford County State of North Carolina aged seventy-six years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on my oath make this following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed on the 7th of June 1832. That he entered the Service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated That he first volunteered as an Indian Spy or Ranger and served three months as Adjutant for about three hundred rangers Commanded by Captain Whitman, White, & Taylor and composed of part of General Rutherford's Army sent against the Cherokee Indians in the now western part of North Carolina. That he marched from Guilford County to the now western part of North Carolina. That he was in a battle with the Indians in the fork of the Catawba River in the now western part of North Carolina. That he next served as a Volunteer as First Sergeant in a company commanded by Capt. John Nelson for the term of five months. That he marched from Martinsville North Carolina to Parisburg on the Savannah River in South Carolina. Said Company was under the Command of Col. John Paisley and attached to General Rutherford's Brigade and General Ashe of North Carolina was the Major General, this service was finished in the year 1779. That if he received a discharge which he cannot now recollect, it is lost. That he next served as Ensign in a company of Guilford Militia Commanded by Captain John Hamilton and was engaged in various expeditions against the Tories in Randolph and Guilford. John Paisley was Colonel. That he also frequently volunteered under Capt. David Gallagher (?) and Col. John Gallagher (?) in various expeditions against the Tories in Randolph and Guilford. That he next served for one month and fifteen days as a volunteer in a Company commanded by Capt. Arthur Forbis against Col. Brian, a Tory or Regular who raised a number of Tories in Rowan and adjoining counties in North Carolina and marched to join the British Army at or near Camden South Carolina. This service was rendered a few weeks before the defeat of General Gates at Camden. That he was next engaged for the term of twelve months in carrying communications from Col. John Paisley, the commander of Guilford Militia and from the Committee of Public Safety to different parts of the state often at the hazard of his life. That he next served as a volunteer Lieutenant for the term of six months in a company commanded by Capt. John McAdam (?) John Paisley Col. in pursuit of the Tory Fannings and his followers through the counties of Randolph, Montgomery, Cumberland and Bladen. This service was rendered in the summer and fall of 1781.That he was in the service of General Greene on his march through North Carolina a short time before the battle of Guilford. That he continued to serve as a volunteer in various expeditions against the Tories up to the close of the War. He further states that he has not either commission or discharge now in his possession. That all the above named officers under whom he served are dead. That he knows only of William Ryan and Ruben Lund(?) who have any personnel knowledge of his services and their affidavits are attached unto. The declarant further states that he was born in the State of Pennsylvania on the 22 day of March 1755. As he was informed by his parents that he removed to North Carolina when he was about ten years of age, where he has resided ever since. That he has no record of his age but believes it is correctly stated above. That he was living in Guilford County when called into Service and has continued to live in said County State of North Carolina ever since. That he is well known in the County of Guilford where he resides and among other persons he is well known to the Reverend William D. Paisley and to Jonathan Perkins (?) That he humbly relinquishes any claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the Pension Roll of the agency of any state. That we believe him to be seventy-six years of age, That he is and believed to be in the neighborhood when he claims to have been a soldier in the Revolution and That we concur in that opinion.
