All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/ncfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Nancy Poquette npoq@hotmail.com July 4, 2006, 1:06 pm Pension Application Of Aaron Phipps, Nat’l Archives Series M804, Roll ____ Application #R8219 Guilford County, NC, October 10th, 1845, Jane Phipps, aged 75 years: Interrogatory: Are you the widow of Aaron Phipps, deceased? “I am.” Was your husband, the said Aaron Phipps a soldier of the Revolutionary War? “He was, as I have often heard him say.” In what company did your husband serve in the war? “In Captain Hays’ [or Hayes] company, as I heard him say one time.” Do you recollect any of the other officers which your husband said he was under during his service in the Revolution? “I do not with certainty, but I think he was, at one time, under the command of one Colonel by the name of Gillespie. The other officers I do not recollect.” In what regiment did your husband serve? “I am unable to tell.” Was he an officer or a private soldier? “A private soldier.” Do you know of anyone now living with whom your husband served in the war? “I do not. There were several persons alive 10 years ago with whom my husband served, but they are all dead.” Do you know the year when your husband entered the service? “I am unable to tell the year, but I think it was in the latter part of the war.” Did your husband serve but one tour in the war? “I heard him say he served 3 tours in the war.” How long did your husband serve in the war? “I am unable to state precisely but I think one tour was for 3 months, and the other two, I do not know whether they were for 3 months tours or for a longer time, but am of the opinion my husband served 9 months or more in the Revolutionary War in said 3 tours.” Where did your husband live when he entered the service of his country? “In Guilford County, NC.” Was your husband drafted, or did he volunteer or substitute? “I heard him say he was drafted one time and substituted in another man’s place, and the other tour I am unable to say whether he was drafted or volunteered or how he went into service.” Was your husband in any battle? “I never heard him say that he was.” Through what section of country did your husband march when he was in the service? “I am unable to tell.” Has your husband any discharges, and where are they? “My husband had 3 discharges when he left the service but they have been burned or destroyed long since.” Why did not your husband apply for a pension in his lifetime? “Some of his friends spoke to him in his later years about having his pension, and told him he was entitled. He made answer and said he knew he was entitled to a pension, but added he was able to live without it, and would not trouble himself about getting it; the foregoing questions I have answered according to what I have always understood from my deceased husband, Aaron Phipps and to the best of my frail memory.” She further declares that she was married to the said Aaron Phipps to the best of her recollection, in the year 1786.
