Humphrey, one of the judges of the Circuit Court in and for the state of Tennessee aforesaid, Robert Singleton, a citizen resident in the said county of Montgomery, who being first sworn to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, declares and says: That he was in the service on the Continental establishment in the time of the Revolutionary War. That in the spring of the year [to the best of his recollection] of 1776 he enlisted as a common soldier in the company of Captain John Nelson in the 4th regiment commanded by Colonel Thomas Polk of the North Carolina line. That he was enlisted for one year, served out his time and was discharged in the town of Halifax, in the state of North Carolina. He returned home to the county of Guilford and remained about a month when he took a commission of ensign under Captain Andrew Vanoy who had authority from the then Governor of North Carolina, Caswell, to choose his own officers and was furnished with blank commissions under the seal of the [United] States. That his commission was filed up and delivered to him, and Lieutenants Campbell and Harden of the same company received their commissions at the same time, which were ___ and filed with the names of those officers in his presence. He marched from Guilford with the company which was at that time, incomplete, to Kingston upon Neuse River, from which place he was ordered to return to Guilford to recruit. He did so procure sufficient numbers of men to complete the company and rejoined Colonel Abraham Shepherd, who commanded the 10th regiment of the North Carolina line, who then lay at Kingston with his regiment. He continued in service for about two years. Sometime in the year 1779, when marching to the northward, he was taken sick at Alexandria in Virginia, at which place many of the soldiers of the regiment were inoculated for the small pox, and was detained a considerable time in consequence of his bad state of health. Colonel Shepherd gave him leave of absence, until his health was restored. He returned again to Guilford and remained there some months, his health not restored, but being better than he had been, he went on to join his regiment, but met Lieutenant Colonel Davison [?Davidson] of the same 10th regiment, who told him that the regiment had been reduced, that it was unnecessary for him to go on, and that he might return home. He did so, and afterwards removed to the state of Georgia, where he was in service of the state in the Indian Wars, and in ____ with the Indians on a pal_____, he lost the sight of his right eye by the powder of the gun of the man who stood next him in the ranks. That afterwards, he removed to the state of Tennessee and got all his papers [among the rest his commission] destroyed while on the road, by reason of their becoming wet, he being much exposed on this journey. He further says he is now in his 77th year of his age, and very poor, has no means of subsistence but by his manual labor. Has no family but two daughters, one of whom has 4 children, and whose husband was either killed or ____ at the City of New Orleans in the defense of that city during the late war [War of 1812.] His daughters and grandchildren are all destitute of support but their own and his labor. His daughter whose husband died at Orleans never having obtained anything from government for her support. Robert Singleton. Additional Comments: This soldier died January 31, 1821.
