GUILFORD COUNTY, NC - MILITARY - John Spence, Revolutionary War Pension Statements by John Davis --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Greensville County, Virginia, Order Book 9, page 231 At a Court held for Greensville County at the Court House on Monday the sixth day of July in the year 1835 On this 6th day of July 1835 personally appears in Court John Davis who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of an act of Congress passed june the 7th 1832 that John Spence inlisted in the war of the Revolution in the year 1779 in the same regiment with this deponant which was the 35th Regiment to the best of his recollection, under the Command of Captain William Watson in the Continental Service for three years or until the close of the war. that he served under major Tucker & Co. Shepherd under the command of Genl. Green that he was at the Battle of Guilford they marched to deep river and from there to Virginia by Petersburg to York Town to the siege of Cornwallis after which time the said Spence returned to Greensville County where he has resided and that John Spence,& Delila & Bart Spence are the only heirs of the said John Spence decd. ------------ Greensville County, Virginia, Order Book 9, p. 245 Court of Quarterly Sessions held on Monday 3 August 1835 Personally appeared in open court John Davis aged seventy six years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaraton that John Spence enlisted in the Virginia line on the Continental establishment in the year 1779 in the same regiment with this Declarant which was the 35th Regiment if his recollecton serves him right under the Command of Capt William Watson, that he enlisted in the County of Greensville for three years or until the end of the war, marched and joined Genl Green near Hillsborough N. C. his field officers were Majr Tucker & Colo Grifin [?] that he acted as Sergeant to the Company the said Declarant was in and was mess mate with said Declarant he was at the battle of Guilford Court House and after that Battle he marched to Deep River and from thence to Virginia by Petersburg to Richmond and thence to York Town to the seige of Corn Wallis, after the surrender of Corn Wallis the said John Spence returned to the County of Greensville State of Virginia where he lived and followed the occupaton of a farmer until his death. This Declarant further more swears that John Spence, Delila Spence and Bat.
