He had for the last twelve years been a faithful and consistent member of the M. E. Church. He had for more than twenty years been a citizen of New Salem: during which time, he had endeared himself to a large circle of friends and acquaintances. C. departed this life the 13th March, in the sixty-sixth year of his age, leaving an affectionate wife and six children to lament his loss. But blessed be God they mourn not as those who have no hope. He professed the religion of Christ when in his 16th year, and lived a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church till death. He was an affectionate husband, a kind father, and a good citizen, ready to assist in every good work. I talked with him about death, and his prospects for heaven. His mind was clear and his confidence in God was unshaken, and he was able to say-I am not at all afraid to die for I know that if my earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved I have a building of God, a house not made with hands eternal in the heavens. He bore his affliction with Christian resignation, and a few hours before he died he remarked that he was so thankful he was so near the good world. And thus in peaceful serenity he passed away, and has gone no doubt to reap his reward in heaven. May God help us to live so that when death comes we may all be able to say like he said, "when it is the Lord's will I am ready." W. L.
