The deceased leaves a wife and two children to mourn their untimely loss. The deceased has been a member of the Methodist Protestant Church about twenty-five years and during which time has lived an exemplary and Christian life, and leaves behind bright evidence of heaven. February 19, 1859 Died: In this place on Tuesday, the 8th inst., of consumption, Mr. David Clark, Junior in the 35 year of his age. February 26, 1859 Married: Near Bruce's Cross Roads, on the 1st inst., by Rev. Wm. J. Ogburn, Andrew Gamble, Esq., to Mrs. Eliza A. Brown. At Church, on the 6th inst., by the same Mr. J. C. Reid's, in Rockingham county, by Rev. E. Dodson, Mr. Abselom Reed, Esq., of Hillsdale, N. C., and Miss Annie C., youngest daughter of the late Reuben Reid, Esq. Died: In Madison, Rockingham county, N. C., on Saturday morning, the 19th ult., of typhoid pneumonia, after an illness of five days, David R. Adams, in the 18th year of his age. The death of this estimable youth has thrown a deep and heavy gloom over the minds of his relations and numerous friends. At the time of his decease he was a student at Beulah Institute, and by his urbane manners and correct deportment had won the highest esteem of his teachers and the warm unwavering attachment of his fellow student. The associates of his early youth have lost a cherished friend. Gifted with a sprightly intellect, genial disposition and warm attachments, it is not strange that he was universally beloved. Though he had never professed a conversion to religion, the subject had often received his serious attentions. During his sickness he was frequently engaged in fervent prayer, and finally passed away to the spirit land as calmly as if he were sinking into the arms of sleep. His friends entertain the blissful hope that their loss is his eternal gain. April 16, 1858 Married: Near McLeansville, in Guilford county, on Tuesday, the 5th inst., by Rev. N. H. D. Wilson, Col. D. N. Sherwood and Miss Annie Minerva, daughter of Mr. Thomas Whittington. In Winston, on the 28th ult., by Rev. N. F. Reid, George D. Boyd, of Rockingham, and Miss Mary Eliza C. Webb, of Winston. Died: In this County, on the 7th of April, Miss Mariah Jane Wiley, in the 25th year of her age. The deceased had long been and severely afflicted; but her trials and sufferings, instead of calling forth complaints, or wearing out her patience, rather served to enhance the gentleness of her nature, and to display in more tender colors, that amiableness of disposition for which she was ever distinguished. Her leading characteristic was that most becoming ornament of woman, "a meek and quiet spirit;" and to this were added an unconquerable energy and cheerfulness, and active an intelligent mind, warm sensibilities, and an eminent sense of propriety and justice. The subject of religion had for some time engaged her serious attention: and before her decease she professed a saving faith in Christ, and seemed to go down into the dark valley leaning upon Him alone, and hope thro' the merits of His atonement to find in Death an eternal release from pain and sorrow. Her friends have, indeed, the unspeakable consolation of believing that their loss is her inestimable gain; and while it is natural for their thoughts to be tinged with tender melancholy as they often revert to the memory of the loved and gone, they should rejoice with humble and devout gratitude for being allowed to hope that God, in His infinite Mercy, has given her a name and a home in that House not made with hands, eternal in the Heavens. April 23, 1859 Died: Suddenly, at Jarratt's Hotel, Petersburg, Va., April 13th, A. T. Gorrell, of this place. Aged about 36 years. May 14, 1859 Married: In Greensboro, Tuesday evening 10th inst., by Rev. L. S. Burkhead, Prof. William Hennig, of Salisbury, and Miss Eliza Sears, of Greensboro. Died: Dr. Edward Speed died very suddenly at his residence in Orange county, on the 17th of April. In the morning he was at a class meeting, offered the opening prayer which was powerful and impressive, and while speaking to the class of a preparation for death, in tones of solemnity which will be remembered he said, "I am ready now." In a few moments the call had come, and disease was upon him. He was carried to his residence, and every effort was made to relieve him; but in vain. In a very short time his spirit entered into rest. Dr. Speed was a native of Virginia; but had for many years been a citizen of this State. For twenty years he had been a useful member of the church. He was a Christian gentleman; a good citizen, a kind father, a faithful husband, we record his death with sadness-for he was our friend trusted and true from our youth to the end. At his death he was in the fiftieth year of his age. May 21, 1859 Married: In Statesville, on the 5th inst., by Rev. W. W. Pharr, Dr. W. M. Campbell to Miss Mary Jane Roseboro.
