Kern, formerly Prof. of Music in Greensboro Female College, in the 40th year of his age. In Wentworth, Rockingham county, on the 8th inst., Mr. James G. Shams, in the 38th year of his age, after an illness which lasted but few days. The deceased was possessed of a quiet, modest, unobtrusive disposition-was kind, generous in his nature, and his death is a source of regret to all who knew him. He had no enemies, and those who knew him best appreciated him most and esteemed him most highly. In Cleveland county, on the 25th ult., Martha E. Gant, aged 8 years, 8 months and 16 days. In Thomasville, on the 8th inst., after an illness of ten days. Mr. Jesse Shelly. In the 58th year of his age. Mr. Shelly was a native of Guilford county, and for the greater protion of his life was engaged in business in Jamestown. In 1856, he removed to Thomasville and was one of the pioneer Shoe Manufacturers of that place. In his character-were admirably blended the qualities which constitute the business man, the good citizen, husband and father. At an early age he professed conversion, and connected himself with the M. E. Church in Jamestown. During his sickness when informed that his departure was at hand he remarked, that while he would wish to live for the sake of his family, he cheerfully submitted the issue to the will of God, his family and friends have that consolation which is so precious in bereavement, that their loss is his everlasting gain. Graham, of Wake county, N. C., and Miss M. Fannie Morton, of Chattooga, formerly of Rockingham co., N. C. In Granville county, on the 27th ult., Mr. John M. Parish to Miss Julia Finch. Died: In Oxford, on the 17th ult., Mr. Wm. Jones, Sr., aged 65 years, 11 months, and five days. He was a member of the Baptist church. In this place, on the 12th inst., of Consumption, Mrs. Martha Harrell, wife of G. W. Harrell. June 15, 1861 Married: In this place on Wednesday, 12th, Mr. Marcellus Jordan and Miss Mary M. Thomas, all of Greensboro. Died: In this place, on 11th inst., Anna Lindsay, daughter of J. L. Morehead. In Davidson County, N. C., with the Flux, Miss Caroline S. Myers, aged 17 years and 6 months. In August, she professed religion and joined the Methodist Protestant Church. In Greensboro, N. C. June 4th, 1861, Mrs. Martha Hall, wife of the late Richard Hall, of Iredell County, aged 85. In Greensborough, June 4th, Isaac William Cook. The deceased, on the appearance of Lincoln's Proclamation, though at the time in delicate health, at once promptly volunteered his services in defence of the South, and joining the Guilford Grays, was stationed at Fort Macon, where he remained until he became too feeble for military duty, he returned to Greensborough, where he lingered with the typhoid fever for several days, and gently departed this life in the full assurance of his eternal happiness. He was about 25 years of age, and was possessed of a most amiable, quiet spirit. July 6, 1861 Died: In the Town of Charlotte, N. C. on the 8th of June, of Typhoid fever, after an illness of two weeks, Thos. E. Washam, Esq.: aged 33 years. The subject of this notice was an honest man, and a most worthy and excellent citizen. He leaves an affectionate wife and two promising children to mourn their great loss; and many friends to regret his death. We trust that his spirit is now enjoying the blessed reward of the just in Heaven, free from the toil and pain of this fleeting life; and that a merciful God will protect and bless his afflicted companion and her orphan children. Samuel J. Fetzer. August 31, 1861 Died: In Fulton, Davie county, N. C., at 6 o'clock, A. M. Aug., 24, of Typhoid fever; Miss Sarah Sharpe, in 23 year of her age. Died on Wednesday, August 24th, 1861, at 4 o'clock, P. M. Mrs. Celestia Albright, wife of James W. Albright, aged 23 years and 11 months. September 14, 1861 Married: On the 12th Aug. 1861, by Rev. A. B. Winfield, Rev. Captain W. G. Haislip, of the Ouachita Conference, and ninth regiment of Arkansas Volunteers, to Miss Anna C. Shelton, of Drew County, Ark., formerly of Greensboro, N. C. Died: At Manasses Junction, Va., Aug. 22nd 1861, of hemorrhage from the bowels, with typhoid fever, George Washington Coble, son of Wm. Coble, Esq., He died as he had lived: a Christian, he had been for some time member of the M. P. Church. He was a member of the "G. D. Boys," and suffered in common with them, during their march to and stay at Bull Run-He there contracted the disease of which he died. Of typhoid fever, on the night if the 25th of August, in the camp near Manasses, Peter R. Clap, of the "Guilford Dixie Boys" aged 21 years, 8 months and 19 days. Edward Green Sterling died at Edgeworth on the 6th inst., in the 21st year of he age. He was a member of the "Guilford Greys" and contracted his disease while on military duty at Fort Macon. September 21, 1861 Died: In Abingdon, Va., of Diphtheria, after a few days illness, on the 27th ult., William James, son of John and Sarah Jane Wix, aged 12 years 2 months and 2 days. At her residence in Guilford county, N. C. on the 16th inst., at 3 o'clock, A. M., Mrs. Anne Gilmer, in the 75th year of her age and in peaceful hopes of the Gospel. In Guilford county, N. C., on the 16th inst., Jefferson Lee, son of William A. and Annie H. Putnam, aged 1 month and 28 days. In Fredericksburg, Va., on the 10th inst., A. E. Causey, of Randolph county, North Carolina, aged about 54 years. The deceas'd was a volunteer, member of the "Davis Guard," Capt. Worth, Randolph county. September 28, 1861 Married: In Greensboro, on the 23rd inst., by W. E. Edwards, Esq., Milton Farington to Sarah Howington. Also, William Harris to Nancy McFarling, all of this county. Died: In this place, on Wednesday 25th, Mrs. D. Doak, wife of J. W. Doak, deceased aged about sixty years. October 19, 1861 Died: In Sommerville, Tenn., on Thursday the 3rd October, Walter A. Winbourne, in the 55th year of his age. The deceased was a native of Guilford County and for several years Sheriff. He died of apoplexy. In Gates County, on the 15th inst., Hon. John M. Dick, in the 73rd year of his age-Judge Dick was a worthy citizen of Greensboro, and at the time of his illness was discharging his official duties on his circuit in the Eastern part of the State. In Stokes county, on the 9th instant, Mary Spainhour, wife of Solomon Spainhour, aged 75 years. October 22, 1861 Married; In this place on Wednesday, the 23rd, by Rev. W. H. Bobbitt, Rev. F. Wood, of the N. C. Conference, to Miss Bettie Pearce, daughter of Jas. F. Pearce of Greensboro. On the 17th inst., at Rob Roy Farm, Davidson county, by the Rev. F. H. Johnson, Prof. William Hennig, of the Statesville Female College, and Miss Minnie, daughter of John F. Rodman, Esq. Died: Near Manassas, on the 2nd Oct., Mr. Lorenzo W. Coe, in the 29th year of his age. The deceased was a member of Capt. Leach's Davidson Guards, though a native of Guilford. His memory will long be cherished for his amiable, generous character. He leaves a wife and many relatives to mourn his death. In Guilford County, N. C., on the 19th Oct., Mrs. Dorcas Coe, widow of the Rev. John Coe, deceased, in the 75th year of her age. November 9, 1861 Married: In this county, on the 29th ult., by Alex. Wilson, D. D., Doct. Geo. K. Foust, of Alamance county, to Miss M. K. Foust, youngest daughter of Danl. Foust, Esq. Died: On the 4th inst., at Camp Gaston, 12 miles below Newbern, R. Henry Lindsay, son of Jed. H. Lindsay, Esq., of this place, aged 23 years. He was a member of the cavalry company commanded by Capt. P. G. Evans. November 23, 1861 Married: In High Point, Nov. 19, 1861, by Rev. S. Lander, of Lincolnton, Rev. Samuel A. Weber, of Shelby, to Miss Sallie A. Langdon, daughter of the late Rev. Wm. I. Langdon, of the North Carolina Conference. November 30, 1861 Married: At Rocky River, Chatham County, on the 20th inst., according to the order of the Society of Friends, J. Milton Woody to Leana L., daughter of Isham Cox. Died: At Oglethrope, Georgia, on 28th Oct., Mrs. Maria F. Willis, wife of Prof. J. B. Willis, of Oglethrope, Georgia. At her residence in Guilford County, November 14, 1861, Mrs. Sarah S. Jackson, in the 58th year of her age, wife of John Jackson; she leaves a kind and affectionate husband, five children and numerous relatives and friends to mourn her loss. For 40 years past she has been a devoted Christian having experienced a hope in her Saviour at Bethel Church, Sept. 27, 1822 and soon after connected herself with the M. E. Church.
