D. H CALDWELL, PAYS NATURE'S DEBT. Greensboro, N. C, Dec. 31-Hon. D. H. Caldwell, died Friday night at 8 o'clock after an. illness of over a year. He was stricken with paralysis several months ago, and had a second stroke a few days ago. Mr. Caldwell was one of the best known men in North Carolina in his earlier manhood and while somewhat eccentric, he was always conscientious and generally right in his stand on public questions. He was a founder and the heaviest stockholder in the Bank of Guilford. He was never married, and his nearest relatives are two nieces and a nephew. He leaves a large estate; how large is not known, but it is thought he was one of the wealthiest men in Greensboro. Mr. Caldwell was elected to the House of Representatives of this State for five successive years and was elected to Congress, but was counted out by Canby in South Carolina. He was a delegate to the convention that nominated Greenly and Brown for the Presidency and Vice-Presidency of the United States in 1872, and in 1873 was elected to the State Senate. He was one of the prime movers in the movement that established the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley railroad.
