Daily News, Tuesday, May 3, 1932 (Robert Leonard, May 1, 1829-May 2, 1932) LEONARD RITES WILL BE CONDUCTED TODAY Funeral to Be Held For Confederate Veteran Who observed 103d Birthday Sunday Last rites for Robert Leonard, who celebrated his 103rd birthday, Sunday with a party arranged in his honor, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home of the daughter with whom he lived. Mrs. J. F. Mahala, 710 Warren street. Mr. Leonard, a Confederate veteran who served as a member of company G (or O), 22nd North Carolina regiment, during the civil war, died at noon yesterday at St. Leo's hospital where he had been carried a few hours earlier. Mr. Leonard had not been well for the past two years, but had not been forced to remain in bed until Saturday. He apparently derived a great deal of pleasure from the birthday occasion Sunday at which time he received a number of gifts and showed interest in the cake with its 103 candles. Mr. Leonard was born on May 1, 1829. The body will be taken this morning from Hanes Funeral home to the residence of Mrs. Mahala. Burial will be in Red Hill cemetery near Groometown. Surviving are two daughters besides Mrs. Mahala, Mrs. Nathanael Pearman and Mrs. John Cornell of Michigan; and a brother, Joseph Leonard, 99, of High Point. There are also a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
