Joseph Potts of Guilford County, Aged Quaker Minister, Dead High Point, Feb. 19 - Rev. Joseph Potts, an aged Quaker preacher, died last night at his home near Deep River church, north of this city. He retired early in the evening in apparently good health and this morning he was missing at the breadfast hour and his housekeeper called him without getting any response. Upon entering his room it was learned that he had died some time during the night, the cause being most likely heart failure. At no time of late has he been sick, and for a man of 75 years he was a fine example of strength, and good health. Only a few days ago he walked to High Point and back to his home a distance of about ten miles. Mr. Potts was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and comes from a prominent Quaker family. He was a man of fine education and a good preacher. About twenty years ago he came South and was first located in the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina where he preached. Later he preached at Greensboro and Mount Airy, and after that he was the first regular pastor for the Quaker church in High Point. During the term of State Treasurer Worth, Mr. Potts was a faithful clerk in that office. For the past seven or eight years he had been the pastor of Deep River church where he owned a nice farm. He was a very successful farmer and took much interest in improved farming. In the passing away of Joseph Potts, the section loses one of the most loved and respected citizens. He was a refined and cultured gentleman and lived a most beautiful Christian life. Coming from that class of William Penn Quakers who long ago settled around Philadelphia, he was always true to his early training and a fine exemplification of that good old Quaker stock. He was never married. The only near relatives of the deceased are two sisters who live in Philadelphia. No particulars can be learned in regard to the funeral, but it is thought the body will be taken to Philadelphia for burial.
