Guilford County, NC - Obituaries from The Patriot, 1826-1830 The Patriot, Greensboro, NC ~~~April 24, 1826 In this place on Thursday last, Captain Zachaus Swaim, after a lingering and painful illness of nearly two years. ~~~June 7, 1826 At Salem in Stokes county, on the 3rd inst., Miss Eliza Bagie, daughter of Mr. Charles Bagie, of that place. ~~~June 14, 1826 In Rockingham county, on the 4th inst., Terry Collins, aged 52 years-she had no family, was a native of Maryland, and a member of the Methodist Church. Few have ever manifested less concern for the fleeting trifles of this world than she did, her life was pious and irreproachable-her death was happy and triumphant. It was truly affecting to see with what supernatural courage she raised her fast-failing hands in victory over the king of terrors, while, with eyes uplifted to heaven, her almost expiring tongue declared the praise of God! The beholders could not restrain their tears-and, it is believed that every one secretly wished to come, at last, to so glorious an end. ~~~July 19, 1826 In this county, on the 10th instant, Mrs. Elizabeth Shearer, consort of the Rev. Also on the same day, in this county, Mr. Donnell Denny, aged 20 years. ~~~September 6, 1826 On the 30th ultimo, Mr. William Denny, an old and respectable citizen of this county, after a lingering illness, which he bore with Christian fortitude. Mr. D. was and had been for many years a member of the Presbyterian Church. ~~~October 4, 1826 At the dwelling house of Jno. Wiley, 8 miles southeast of Greensborough, September the 27th, a man, who said his name was Arthur Reaves, that he was a native of Franklin county, a Shoemaker by trade, and that he had a wife and 3 children in Orange county. At Enfield, in Halifax county on the 17th September last Levi H. M'Lean, Esq., son of Capt. Marshall M'Lean of this county. He had been married but ten days previous to his death. In Raleigh, on Sunday, the 31st ult., Mrs. Hinton, wife of Ransom Hinton. In Petersburg, Va., on the 23rd ult., Dr. Richard Field, in the 63rd year of this age. He was an accomplished gentleman, distinguished physician and a learned man. Society has sustained a serious loss in the death of this amiable man. He has been for the past two years, a member of the legislature of this State, and was, we understand, previous to his death, a candidate for re-election. They were married in 1799, and have lived together ever since, in the most cordial and uninterrupted love, harmony and happiness.
