The deceased was a native of Maine. At New Salem, Randolph County, N. C. on Tuesday the 9th inst., of Typhoid phenomena after an illness of only three days, Joel Ingold, in the fiftieth year of his age. He had for the last twelve years been a faithful and consistent member of the M. E. Church. He had for more than twenty years been a citizen of New Salem: during which time, he had endeared himself to a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Though hard for his bereaved family and friends to see one so near and dear to them snatched from their midst; they have the consolation to know, that he left every evidence of a bright prospect of a blessed immortality beyond the grave. He was a constant friend-a kind parent, and an affectionate husband. In Stokes county, on the 31st Jan'y, Josiah Leake, aged 78 years old and 11 months. The deceased was a good man and kind neighbor. He served in defense of his country at Norfolk, and was honorably discharged. He leaves a numerous circle of relatives, his descendants numbering 109. C. departed this life the 13th March, in the sixty-sixth year of his age, leaving an affectionate wife and six children to lament his loss. But blessed be God they mourn not as those who have no hope. He professed the religion of Christ when in his 16th year, and lived a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church till death. He was an affectionate husband, a kind father, and a good citizen, ready to assist in every good work. I talked with him about death, and his prospects for heaven. His mind was clear and his confidence in God was unshaken, and he was able to say-I am not at all afraid to die for I know that if my earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved I have a building of God, a house not made with hands eternal in the heavens. He bore his affliction with Christian resignation, and a few hours before he died he remarked that he was so thankful he was so near the good world. And thus in peaceful serenity he passed away, and has gone no doubt to reap his reward in heaven. May God help us to live so that when death comes we may all be able to say like he said, "when it is the Lord's will I am ready." W. L. Van Eaton ~~~April 17, 1858 In Raleigh, on the 9th inst., Daniel Dupre, Sr., Esq.; who through a long life maintained an irreproachable character, and a spotless integrity. C., on Saturday morning, the 19th ult., of typhoid pneumonia, after an illness of five days, David R. Adams, in the 18th year of his age. The death of this estimable youth has thrown a deep and heavy gloom over the minds of his relations and numerous friends. At the time of his decease he was a student at Beulah Institute, and by his urbane manners and correct deportment had won the highest esteem of his teachers and the warm unwavering attachment of his fellow student. The associates of his early youth have lost a cherished friend. Gifted with a sprightly intellect, genial disposition and warm attachments, it is not strange that he was universally beloved. Though he had never professed a conversion to religion, the subject had often received his serious attentions. During his sickness he was frequently engaged in fervent prayer, and finally passed away to the spirit land as calmly as if he were sinking into the arms of sleep. His friends entertain the blissful hope that their loss is his eternal gain. ~~~April 16, 1858 In this County, on the 7th of April, Miss Mariah Jane Wiley, in the 25th year of her age. The deceased had long been and severely afflicted; but her trials and sufferings, instead of calling forth complaints, or wearing out her patience, rather served to enhance the gentleness of her nature, and to display in more tender colors, that amiableness of disposition for which she was ever distinguished. Her leading characteristic was that most becoming ornament of woman, "a meek and quiet spirit;" and to this were added an unconquerable energy and cheerfulness, and active an intelligent mind, warm sensibilities, and an eminent sense of propriety and justice. The subject of religion had for some time engaged her serious attention: and before her decease she professed a saving faith in Christ, and seemed to go down into the dark valley leaning upon Him alone, and hope thro' the merits of His atonement to find in Death an eternal release from pain and sorrow. Her friends have, indeed, the unspeakable consolation of believing that their loss is her inestimable gain; and while it is natural for their thoughts to be tinged with tender melancholy as they often revert to the memory of the loved and gone, they should rejoice with humble and devout gratitude for being allowed to hope that God, in His infinite Mercy, has given her a name and a home in that House not made with hands, eternal in the Heavens. ~~~April 23, 1859 Suddenly, at Jarratt's Hotel, Petersburg, Va., April 13th, A. T. Gorrell, of this place. Aged about 36 years. ~~~May 14, 1859 Dr. Edward Speed died very suddenly at his residence in Orange county, on the 17th of April. In the morning he was at a class meeting, offered the opening prayer which was powerful and impressive, and while speaking to the class of a preparation for death, in tones of solemnity which will be remembered he said, "I am ready now." In a few moments the call had come, and disease was upon him. He was carried to his residence, and every effort was made to relieve him; but in vain. In a very short time his spirit entered into rest. Dr. Speed was a native of Virginia; but had for many years been a citizen of this State. For twenty years he had been a useful member of the church. He was a Christian gentleman; a good citizen, a kind father, a faithful husband, we record his death with sadness-for he was our friend trusted and true from our youth to the end.
