Wood Succumed This Morning Following Long Illness _______________________ J.O "Daddy" Wood for 18 years a member of the local police department and one of the most popular officers ever to wear the uniform here, died this morning at 8:30 o'clock at his home, 501 Cable Street, following an illness that had lasted for several months. For 40 years, Mr. Wood, who was 59 years old, had been a resident of High Point. He was born in this county March 9, 1874, the son of J.A. and Laura Ledbetter Wood. He served in the police department until about 5 years ago when ill health forced his retirement. The last five years he was with the department he was desk sargeant, but for 13 years before that he was in the patrol service. Mr. Wood was twice married. His first wife died in 1906 and he married later Miss Mamie Hubbard who survives with five sons, John Denny Wood, Herbert A. Wood, Paul H. Wood, Judson O. Wood, and James A. Wood. Two daughters, Mrs. J.H. Hubbard of Reidsville, and Miss Mary Frances Wood of this city. Two brothers, John R. Wood of Greensboro and W.W. Wood of Welch, W. Va., together with two sisters, Miss Malissia Wood and Mrs. A.L. Oliver, both of Greensboro, survive. Mr. Wood, was a member of the Calvary M.E. church and the Patriotic Order Sons of America. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock from the Calvary M.E. church by the pastor, Rev. D.H. Rhinehart, assisted by Rev. Geo. T. Tunstall and Rev. O.L. Ruth. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
