PAISLEY WHITE GOWDY “To the worshipful, the County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of the County of Guilford, the petition of JEANE GOWDY, the wife and relict of William Gowdy, deceased, humbly showeth: “That sometime in the year 1791, William Gowdy, her husband, deceased, making his last will and testament, wherein he willed to his said wife, JANE GOWDY the third part of all his lands whereof he died seized, and the said JEAN doth ___ and say that he the said William died seized of the following tracts of land lying and being in the County of Guilford, to wit: “One tract lying on both sides of Russell’s Branch, waters of Reedy Fork of Haw River, beginning at a branch in Russell’s line, running thence east on Russell’s line, crossing two branches 229 poles to a Spanish oak, thence north crossing a branch 210 poles to a post oak, thence west crossing a branch 229 poles to a white oak, thence south 210 poles to the first station, and containing 300 acres of land.” “One other tract lying on the Long Branch of Reedy Fork beginning at Andrew and John Carnahan’s southeast corner black oak in JOHN WHITE’s line in the west side of a valley, running thence along said JOHN WHITE’s line east, crossing a branch 160 poles to a grub, thence north 200 poles to a post oak and thence west 160 poles to said Andrew and John Carnahan’s line, then along their line west to the first station, containing 200 acres of land.” “One other tract situate in Russell’s Branch of Reedy Fork on the eastern declivity of a Rocky Ridge and west of the aforesaid Russell’s Branch, running thence along his own line south crossing a branch 210 poles to his own corner beech on the west bank thereof in William Russell’s line, thence along his own line west 60 poles to a black oak in or near Patrick Dimond’s line, thence north crossing two branches 320 poles to a white oak, thence east crossing two branches 177 poles to a black oak grub, then south 110 poles to his own line, then along his own line west to the first station, containing 200 acres of land.” “One other tract of land lying on the waters of the Reedy Fork, beginning at a post oak in his own line, running west 20 poles to a post oak, then north 74 poles to a hickory grub by the Ironworks Road, then east 150 poles to a post oak, then south 73 poles to a post oak on a former line of his own, then east on said line 130 poles to his corner post oak, then south one pole to a stake, then to the first station, containing 70 acres.” “One other tract lying on both sides of the Long Branch of the Reedy Fork beginning at his own corner post oak near the east side of a glade in Andrew and John Carnahan’s line, running thence along this line east 60 poles to their corner post oak, then along this line south to JOHN WHITE’s corner post oak and along his line to the ?same ?course, crossing said Long Branch 240 poles to his corner 3 black oaks in Abraham Whiteside’s line, then along his line west, crossing Muddy Branch 60 poles to the claimant’s own corner 2 white oaks, then along his line north ?along said Long Branch 240 poles to the beginning, containing 90 acres.” “One other tract of land on the waters of Reedy Fork of Haw River beginning at Abraham Whiteside’s corner Spanish oak, running thence along his line south 40 poles to a black oak Moses McCuiston’s corner, then along his line west, crossing the Cat-Tail Meadow Branch 158 poles to a red oak Thomas Anderson’s corner, then along his line north crossing said Branch and the Ironworks Road 240 poles to his corner post oak, then north 80 degrees east along Henry Ross’s line 90 poles to a post oak, then north 70 degrees east along his line 112 poles to a hickory in the ?back of the ?fau ?hit and Long Branches, then east crossing the east ___ [torn] of the Long Branch 180 poles to a post oak sapling, then south crossing the Long Branch 265 poles to Abraham Whiteside’s line, then along his line west 157 poles to the first station, containing 560 acres.” “Which said different tracts the said JANE GOWDY doth ____ the said William Gowdy died possessed of, containing in the whole, 1,420 acres, which the said JEAN, agreeable to the last will and testament of the said William is entitled to the one third part thereof, and prays the worshipful court that they would order and direct a jury to apportion and lay off the one third part of said lands for the dower of the said JEAN agreeable to the meaning and intent of the said William as expressed in his said will and in pursuance of the law in such ___ made and provided and gave to the said JEAN, such other and further belief in the premises as shall appear to your worships to be just and right. And the said JEAN further prays that a summons issue from your said court citing the heirs of the said William, to wit: James Gowdy, William Gowdy, and William Gowdy, the godson of Robert and John Gowdy, to appear at our next county court to be held for the county aforesaid the 3rd Monday in August next, and then and there to show cause, if any they have, why the said JEAN should not be entitled to dower in said lands and yours shall ever pray, etc.” From North Carolina State Archives, CR.046.508.96, Estate Records of William Gowdy, 1792: “Petition ordered that the sheriff summon a jury of good lawful men to allot and lay off the dower of JEAN GOWDY, widow and relict of William Gowdy, deceased, agreeable to the prayer of the petition and make report of the proceeding to me at court to be held for said county on the third Monday in August next and have you then and there this order.
