William Walton Kitchin Fifty-first governor of North Carolina - was born near Scotland Neck, North Carolina, Oct. 9, 1866, son of William H. and Maria F. (Arrington) Kitchin. His father was captain in company I, 12th regiment of North Carolina Confederate army, and was a member of the 46th congress. The son was edcuated at Vine Hill Academy and was graduated at Wake Forest College in 1884. During 1885 he edited the "Scotland Neck Democrat," and then began the study of law under his father, and afterwards under the late Hon. John Manning, at the University of North Carolina. In 1887 he was admitted to the bar and in January, the following year, located at Roxboro, NC, where he still practices his profession. In politics Mr. Kitchin is a Democrat. In 1890 he was chairman of the county executive committee; in 1892 was the nominee of his party for the state senate, and during 1897-1909 was a member of the 55th, 56th, 57th, 58th and 59th congresses, being reelected to the 60th congress with a majority of 5,414 over C. A. Reynolds, Republican. In November, 1908, he was elected governor of North Carolina by a majority of 37,342 votes. During the first year of his administration the state legislature passed laws for the protection of forests and to regulate the sale of foodstuffs and the packing and sale of fish, for the appointment of inspectors of electric, gas and water meters, requiring seats for women employees, prohibiting blacklisting, and providing for the free treatment of indigent persons having diphtheria. Gov. Kitchin was married Dec. 22, 1892 to Musette Satterfield, of Roxboro.
