Born in Roanoke Rapids, NC, and reared in Gaston, she was a daughter of the late Johnnie B. and Alma S. Powell and was also predeceased by her sister, Betty Jean Timmons. Dorothy was a 1953 graduate of Gaston NC High School. She was a sales associate for Peebles Department Store for many years and was a member of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church. Dorothy was a very loving and giving person to her family and throughout the community. She loved planting her flowers and watching them grow. Survivors include her husband of 64 years Robert J. “Pete” Allen; a son Robert L. Allen; three daughters Cathy A. Bradshaw (Mark), Cheryl Williams (Steve), and Laurie Narducci; a sister Christine Gordon; a brother Louis “Bobby” Powell (Linda); a special sister-in-law Rose Phillips; five grandchildren Ashley Gavin (Hudson), Michelle Benson (Kevin), Whitney Worrell (Charlie), Shane Bradshaw, and Travis Starke; nine great grandchildren; and a special friend whom she thought of as a daughter, Vanessa Vick. The family would like to thank New Century Hospice and caregivers, special friends Larry and Adeline Tillett, Steve and Lynn Ivey, and the church family of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church. A Funeral Service will be held at 2 PM Sunday, February 10, 2019 in Wright Funeral Home with Rev. Curtis Faison and Rev. Julian Mills (cousin of Dorothy) officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Courtland. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 PM Saturday in the funeral home and suggests that memorial donations be made to Sedley Fire Department or Tucker Swamp Baptist Church.
