She played on the girls’ basketball team at Scotland Neck High School. She was a 1955 graduate of Wake Forest College (University) in Wake Forest, NC. She was a 1956 graduate of St. Mary’s Hospital School of Medical Technology in Knoxville, TN. Mary Ann worked as a lab technician in Covington, VA and then as a substitute teacher at Franklin High School in Franklin, VA. She was a volunteer for the Southampton Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and served as its treasurer. She was an active, longtime member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Franklin, VA. There, she served on the Vestry, was the superintendent of (and taught at) the Sunday school, participated in many womens’ activities, and was the chair of the altar guild for many years. Mary Ann was a member of the Franklin Book Club and Wednesday Morning Book Club. Bridge was a favorite pastime throughout her adult life, and she belonged to several bridge clubs in Southampton County, VA. She began vacationing in the Outer Banks of North Carolina as a young child and continued to do so throughout her entire life. In 1979, she and her husband built a cottage in Kill Devil Hills, NC, where they enjoyed spending several months a year with family and friends. Left to cherish Mary Ann’s memory are her: husband of 65 years, Gene Mercer Correll of Franklin, VA; two daughters, Nancy Correll Brinkley (and husband Tom) of Smithfield, VA and Rebecca Correll McClendon (and husband Frank) of Jefferson, NC; son, Balfour Dunn Correll (and wife Janice) of Atlanta, GA; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth Mercer McClendon of Richmond, VA and Caroline Josey McClendon of Arlington, VA. A private graveside service will be held at Old Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery in Scotland Neck, NC.
